English Translation of Quran by Aqib Qadri

I recently completed reading Brother Aqib Qadri's English translation of Kanzul Iman from Urdu, and I must say, he has done a commendable job. Unlike other translations that feel like Urdu-to-English renditions, Brother Aqib has managed to retain the essence of Kanzul Iman while incorporating the original Arabic text seamlessly. I strongly believe that every Sunni mosque should consider adopting this translation instead of mubtadis.

However, while the translation itself is praiseworthy, there are some areas for improvement

• Formatting inconsistencies need to be addressed to ensure a smooth reading experience. Some translations appear on new surah headers, while others do not align properly with the corresponding Arabic text.
• Printing errors, such as missing diacritical marks and letters, are concerning as they could lead to misinterpretation while reading the Quran.
• I appreciate Brother Aqib's approach of providing bracketed explanations for Ta'wilat, but there needs to be consistency in its application throughout the translation.
• The low paper quality of the copy I obtained, published by Raza e Mustafa, is disappointing. Considering the importance of this translation, it would be beneficial to publish future editions on higher GSM or gloss paper to enhance durability and readability, even if it results in a slightly higher cost.

 

Supplication this Ramadan (1445 hijri)

And do not ever assume that Allah is unaware of what the unjust do; He does not give them respite but for a day in which the eyes will become fixed, staring. Chapter 14: ibraHím verse 42

During this sacred month of Ramadan, given the harrowing events unfolding in Palestine, all our heartfelt supplications should be for the martyrs, the severely wounded, and the terrorized among the children, women and the elderly Muslims of falasteen - those who are facing an unprecedented devastation of their homeland since 7 October 2023, almost 130 days by now, who are losing their homes, their beloved ones and their livelihoods, everyday – indeed, losing everything that makes this life livable. Suffering severe wounds with no recourse to necessary medical support, exposed to the cold during the nights and the sweltering desert sun during the days, continuous hunger, mental trauma and shock – these forsaken souls have even been deprived of minimal humanitarian aid.

And yet the morale of these exemplary believers remains undiminished, and they only say inna lillaHi wo inna ilayHi raajioon: “Indeed we belong to Allah azza wa jalla and indeed it is to Him we are to return.”

And here we are – with all the comforts of home. Our table spreads are laden with a variety of savory, sweet, hot and chilled foods, while our brethren in faith, those who stand unflinchingly in the way of the zionists and the Holy City, with our first Qiblah, al-Aqsa - they are starving, and wanting even for a few mouthfuls of drinking water. What a stark contrast!

As the world watches them suffer from afar, as we watch, seated on our comfortable beds, our children making merry and theirs crying out in agonies of hunger and pain – we only hear them say, with their Imaan (belief) as strong as mountains: hasbunallaHu wo nEmal wakeel: “Allah is sufficient for us and what an excellent Disposer of Affairs.”?

Do men fancy that they will be left just upon their declaring, “We believe”, and they will not be tested? We indeed tested those before them – so Allah will surely test the truthful, and will surely test the liars. Or do they who commit evil deeds imagine that they can escape from Us? What an evil judgement they impose!

3: ál Imrán 92
You can never attain virtue until you spend in Allah's cause the things you love; and Allah is Aware of whatever you spend.

Hadith
The sayings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny)

عَنْ أنَسٍ بن مَاِلك رَضِي اللهُ عَنْه عن النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قال: لَا يُؤمِنُ أَحَدُكُم حَتّٰى يُحِبَّ لِأخِيه مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
None of you will have faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ رَضِي اللهُ عَنْه قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي تَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ مَثَلُ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى مِنْهُ عُضْوٌ تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ الْجَسَدِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى
“The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.”

Someone has listed a few secrets of The Palestinians being optimistic.

a. Yaqeen: Certainty, deep faith, confidence and trust in God (Allah: al ilaaH – The God)
- Allah is on our side and He protects us. With His protection, nothing can harm us.
- No supplies, flour, gas or petrol – How do you manage? The answer is: We have our Rab on our side. He is ar-Razzaq The Sustainer.

b. Obodiyah: Subservience to Allah based on certainty in Him. The Call for Prayers without any interruption.

c. Tasleem: Submission to and complete acceptance of Allah’s decree. They are ready to face the circumstances and they prepare themselves by reciting The Quran. Not scared to die. Because death to us means – being a martyr.

d. Tawakkul: Reliance upon Allah azza wa jalla – I am proud that my family are martyrs. “Allah is sufficient for us and what an excellent Disposer of Affairs.”

e. Taqwa: Piety and devotion towards Allah – They are offering Prayers at the destroyed Masjids and they say that this only increases our faith, piety and determination.

f. Rida: Satisfaction or perfect contentment with different life events and Allah’s Will or Decree. They raise their voice saying Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen – All Praise is to Allah, Lord of the Creation. They Say: laa haula walaa quwwata illa billah: No might nor power, but from Allah.

اَللّٰہُ أَکْبَرُ کَبِیرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ کَثِیرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰہِ بُکْرَۃً وَأَصِیلًا
Allahu Akbar kabeera, wal hamdulillahi kaseera wo subhaanalliHi bukratan wo aseela

Allah is the Greatest, Plenty of Praises be to Allah, and Glory be to Allah, morning and evening

g. Al hubbub lillah: Love for the sake of Allah. A Mother who lost her child during bombing thanks Allah azza wa jalla. A man who lost his grandchildren says that he learnt patience and constancy. And this love from the great religion of Islam and from the morals of the Prophets and Messengers.

Your commitment: Spread the message about their grief. Support those who are suffering. Never forget them. Stand on the right side of history.

اللہُمَّ اِنِّیٓ اَسْءَلُکَالْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِیَةَ فِی الدُّنْیَا وَالْاٰخِرَۃِ
Oh our lord, indeed, I seek your pardon and wellness in this world and the hereafter.

They are subject to a horrible trial which the whole world is watching, their conscience forcing many to raise their voices. The unshaken faith of the Palestinians in face of this immense tragedy has pushed many non-believers to think seriously of our religion, to study it afresh and ponder over its truth.

And We will surely test you with some fear and hunger, and with paucity of wealth and lives and crops; and give glad tidings to those who patiently endure. Those who say when calamity befalls them, “Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed it is to Him we are to return.” Al Qur'an Chap 2: al baqarah - The Cow. Verses 155-156

For this reason; We decreed for the Descendants of Israel that whoever kills a human being except in lieu of killing or causing turmoil in the earth, so it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whoever saves the life of one person, is as if he had saved the life of all mankind; and undoubtedly Our Noble Messengers came to them with clear proofs - then after this indeed many of them are oppressors in the earth. Al Qur'an Chapter 5: al Maa-idah - The Table Spread. Verse 32

And were it not for that all people be on one religion, we would have made for the disbelievers of the Most Gracious, roofs and stairs of silver which they would climb. And doors of silver for their houses and couches of silver upon which they would recline. And diverse adornments; and all this is usage only of the life of this world; and the Hereafter with your Lord, is for the pious. Al Qur'an Chapter 43: az zukhruf - The Adornment. Verses 33-35

By oath of the heaven which contains the constellations. And by oath of the Promised Day. And by oath of the day that is a witness and by oath of a day in which the people present themselves. Accursed be the People of the Ditch! The people of the fueled blazing fire. When they were sitting at its edge. And they themselves are witnesses to what they were doing to the Muslims! And what did they dislike from the Muslims, except that the Muslims accepted faith in Allah the Most Honourable, the Most Praiseworthy? To Him only belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is a Witness over all things. Indeed, those who troubled the Muslim men and Muslim women, and then did not repent – for them is the punishment of hell, and for them is the punishment of fire. Allāh’s name to begin with; the Most Beneficent, the Merciful

All Praise to Allah, the Lord of all Creation, and infinite greetings of peace and blessings upon the Noble Messenger of Allah, the Last Prophet and our Master - the Holy Prophet Muhammad I.

With the deepest sense of gratitude and humility, I praise and thank Allah (subĥānahu wa táālā) for enabling me to supplement this English rendition of Kanz-al-Imaan by Mawlana Aqib Farid al-Qadri (raĥimahullāh) with a fully typed out script of the Holy Qur’an, flowing concurrently with the translated text.

ye bade karam ke hain faisle, ye bade naseeb ki baat hai

May Allah accept this humble service - Aameen.

Organization of the Book

The Qur’anic text is available in multiple organizational styles, each with its own distinct purpose and history. The earliest and universally followed units are the aayah (or verse, literally “sign”, pl. aayaat) and the Surah (or chapter, literally “row”, pl. suwar). There are 6235 verses and a 114 chapters in the Qur’an.

In the present work, the actual text of the Qur’an begins at Page-2 of the numbered pages and continues through to Page-604. Individual chapters may be accessed directly by clicking the respective titles listed in the Table of Contents (Pages i through vi). Note that this feature will only work in PDF readers which support hyperlinks.

The distinct feature of the Table of Contents is that, the sequence of revelation is mentioned as well as the tenure in which the revelation was sent (before and after the migration of Prophet Muhammad Peace and blessings be upon him from Mecca to Medina). 30 Parts (paara) are marked to recite Qur’an in a month and each Part has 20 pages for the one who memorize (huffáz) and recite during 20 cycles (rakat) of prayer (taraweeh) during the month of Ramadan. Seven stages (or manzil, pl. manaazil) are indicated to recite Qur’an in not less than a week.

About the Translation

Treasure of Faith - is a praiseworthy attempt by Mawlana Aqib Farid al-Qadri (raĥimahullāh) at rendering the celebrated Urdu work, Kanz-ul-Imaan, into the English language.

Kanz-ul-Imaan – by the great scholar and polymath, reviver of the 19th century, Imam Ahmed Rida Khan (rađiyAllāhu ánhū) - is the most authentic translation of the Holy Qur'an in Urdu, highly acclaimed for its literary beauty and its faithful representation of the Qur’anic message in the light of agreed upon exegeses and Sunni creed.

Abu hasan in his book “Who is Alahazrat” lists the works of Alahazrat from Page 56 onwards.

Though there is much room for improvement, Mawlana Aqib’s remains one of the better translations of the Kanz. Mawlana had set a very high and noble standard for his work, aiming to retain in his translation as many of the excellent qualities found in the Urdu original as he could, noteworthy among which are:

· Suitability of Words and expressions: Sometimes, a word or a phrase, can have unintended connotations or might mean multiple things due to their ambiguous construction or because of the vogue or usage by native speakers of the language. In such cases, even if it be a valid and exact translation from the source language, it can still take on meanings that are altogether foreign to its intent or even the complete opposite of it.

While many other translators are often found to have been lax in this regard, the author of Treasure of Faith has striven to choose words that do not inadvertently contradict any of the articles of the Islamic faith and its doctrines. Especially when the reference is to Allah (ta’ala) or His Noble Prophets or the Muslims, he has been mindful of the etiquettes of address, respecting their rights, statuses and dignity, and ensuring that the words do not in any way impinge their sacred character and high honor.

· Lucidity: Accessibility has been one of the primary objectives before the translator and, unlike some other translations which aim for high literary quality and are prized merely for their flourishes, or those which are more suitable for an academic setting than a general readership, he has gone the extra mile in order ensure that his translation remains accessible to as wide an audience as possible - choosing simple, modern day English and simple sentence structures over flowery phrases or archaic constructions, keeping it lucid, unambiguous and easy to understand.

Where this too was not sufficient, explanations have been added in parentheses to aid understanding - further simplifying the meanings and removing ambiguities.

The extent to which Mawlana succeeded in achieving his stated objectives is for his readers to decide, but his efforts and intentions deserve whole-hearted appreciation and unqualified gratitude.

A comparative study of the competing translations of the Qur’an is beyond the scope of this preface, but the reader may refer to the following resource for a deeper appreciation of the salient qualities that make Kanz-ul-Imaan stand out among all Urdu translations, making it not just the best but also the safest route to understanding the Book of Allah, as far as translations go.

I have been very impressed by the quality of the publication can I ask what font/script you use for the arabic text, its the one that is most easiest for me to read.

 

Is there any revised version in pdf format ? And how can I buy it in Pakistan ?

I would also suggest using Arabic transliteration in maruf form (rather than majhool) [i.e. spelling as Muminun instead of Mominun, Muhammad instead of Mohammed etc.].

Although you haven't used diacritical marks in transliteration of Arabic words (especially Surah names), it would be nice if you use them wherever they are absolutely necessary (without actually going overboard with it). For example, two A's in Saffat are pronounced differently; a diacritical mark on second "a" will be useful.

Some of the brackets are indeed explanations, and some are just addtional words to remove ambiguities - these were shown to the publisher who opined that it would be safer to print at the end of the verse, to maintain design etc.

While I don't want to be critical but from what I have read so far I personally would have liked all the additional information/explanation in brackets removed and put in as footnotes.
