Just do a youtube search on milad + cake cutting. You will see a lot of cringe worthy videos and also videos of wahabis having a go at it with full zest. I believe this practice started circa 2016, and I think there is a minority of Sunnis in india too doing it, with pakistanis at the forefront. You'll also see Arab videos of cakes made for the occasion, but I think desis are the overzealous ones to make a ritual out of cake cutting.
What, do people actually cut cakes in the name of mawlood? First time I have seen this. At least this practice isn't prevalent amongst Indian Muslims as far as I know. Has it stemmed from Dr Padri's xmas cake cutting by any chance?
I hate using the cake (not just as something to eat, I'm talking about with candles and the cutting ceremony) for Mawlid celebration. It sets a dangerous precedent that will take away the love and spirituality from the Mawlid, for many many reasons. Feel free to shoot me down, but personally I don't consider someone who cites the "it's mibah" argument to support or appease this practice of cake cutting as a faqih or mufti, for he is incapable to see that the mafsadah far outweighs the maslahah. Secondly, what exactly is it with desis and their uncontrollable desire to cut cakes?
