Despite wanting to give preference to their religion some of those interviewed seem to be still influenced by 'modern' ideas of what it means to be successful and what it means to be truly oneself, what it means to be a human.

It is not for me to doubt their sincerity but while they have overcome one hurdle, or are tying to, to emerge into open air and yet stay unapologetically authentic and proud of who they are - not try to measure up to ideals thrust upon them by those who either hate them for their religion or race or hold a condescending and/or patronizing attitude towards them, they still have a long way to go and I think that reading good books will accelerate their journey.

I do not know what view they hold towards traditional Islamic Scholarship but that is a good place to start to get a more realistic and informed view of what constitutes 'authenticity', 'success', 'honor', 'self-respect' etc. There still are blind spots which I feel can be addressed by broadening their horizons via a critical comparative study of what's called 'modern' life and the traditional Muslim scholarship.

May Allah ta'ala guide these brothers and sisters further still and aid them in their struggles and open their hearts to His Truth*.

*and I don't mean that in a condescending sense, these people seem intelligent enough to discover the truth for themselves if they merely looked a bit further down the road. wa Allahu a'alam
