I have to agree with Brother Abu Nibras-this is nothing more than a stunt to increase isalmophobia. Soon we'll have to remove our 'imamah and beards to prove our moderation.
I agree with Chisti, there is no such thing as a moderate Deobandi. The Times would, i believe, label Sunnis of being 'extreme'. As everyone is aware music, playing chess and inter mixing are all Haram. The Hijab is Fardh.
we always try to tell people that the extremists in the subcontinent are the ideological brothers of the deobandis. they are just as sidi chishti said they are. munaafiqs. one face for the outside world, another amongst themselves.
another one http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article2402998.ece with due respect to our differences with them , this article on a cursory read seems to largely misquote and make the usueal wrong inferences of the west, from what he has said, it is more of an islamophobic article than one about deobandi extremism. there are certainly some cases where Riyadh ul Haq might have gotten carried away... which is not very uncommon for deobandis with the talibanish fringe.
Brother i don't believe there is such a thing as a moderate deobandi - they're only moderate when applying for a grant from the government or when they're meeting with arab Shayookh and hey presto - suddenly they're moderate. They don't want to show their true face to the govt. just incase that means they lose out on their grant and they conceal their wahhabism from arab shayookh to solicit there support and maintain the belief that they're Sunni. The salafis have deviated in everyway more than the deobandi's but i detest the deobandi's more - a salafi will stick his chest out and say he's a salafi and that a,b,c is shirk bidat kufr wheresas a deobandi will say he's a Hanafi, Naqshbandi, Maturidi to arab shayookh but will reveal his true wahhabi najdi face when back at home. They're so hypocritical.
