  2. but the core of the scientific method is based on experimental verification and if the model doesn't fit it is adjusted or discarded and a new model is developed. that is the brilliance of the scientific method. so if, for example, the Standard Model of particle physics turns out not to match with experimental observation (it currently does but just for the sake or argument) it will be discarded or changed and a better fitting model will be developed that fits the observations better. unlike religious dogma which refuses to acknowledge it could ever be wrong even when the facts are clear and thus won't permit reinterpretation.

so yes science can get thinks wrong sometimes but the beauty of the scientific method is it works and it works because there are no sacred cows. you report your results and if the results disagree with an authority of the past so what you see if the results are repeatable by others and if so you accept the authority was wrong and you adapt the new model. that's how it progresses.

actually a lot of theories and "science" is speculative. remember the chocolate filled saturn i posted? but modern liberal scientist intellectuals will swallow anything in the name of science.

Anybody who has attended a university and taken psychology courses will tell you psychology is the weakest "science". It is full of assumptions and crack pot theories that end up changing rapidly. It piggy backs off of information learned from biology and chemistry and puts its own spin on it. At least that is what I have encountered.

notes for reasonable people who are sound in mind and spirit:

    1. No one can deny that some people do develop certain mental imbalances (I know someone who used to get these attacks which could be termed as schizophrenia) but with the passage of time a lot of normal (in the sense of being fully aware and in control of oneself) mental states have been labelled as mental disorders AND some (ex: 'same sex attraction' which is patently mental and people who engage in it exhibit severe mental abnormalities) have simply been removed from the list and classed as natural, courtesy the APA which is more a political tool for social engineering than a scientific organization.

    2. Every section of the social structure is rife with malpractices and psychiatry is no exception and it has it's own set of weaknesses which are exploited for personal gains, ex: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/mental-health-medications/index.shtml

    3. The DSM-5 sort of confirmed the fears and justified the criticisms that many who have a stake in the field had expressed, which is what the article I posted was pointing out. True, it went overboard but that made it fun to read, not much unlike satire, and was the reason I posted it. Moreover, it wasn't just a bunch of paranoid sentences. see: this, this, and this.

    4. Drugs, especially psychotropic medications, should always be taken as the last resort and that too for as limited a period as possible. Every single one of these can have damaging side effects which can last for life. see the following pages for more info:

    5. My attention was drawn to this issue after conversation with an intern doctor who has worked in the psychiatry department of a reputed hospital who concurred that many so-called disorders were actually just the mischief of the nafs and the drugs prescribed for many of these are nothing more than chemical sedatives besides the fact that these classifications are based on symptoms and are therefore not entirely reliable. A lot of it is just scientific sounding mumbo-jumbo to justify the practitioner's diagnosis.

I will only respond to members who are reasonable and who don't write just to annoy people and have fun at their expense.

    wassalaam.

prove that the site is run by the 'extreme fringes of the internet sites', whatever that means.

and also let us know how 'mainstream' are the lewd poems of abu Nuwas.

  8. Brother Wadood, Prozac has side effects like any other drug but it works in curing depression whereas ta'wizes almost never work. Even when they do, like I said, it's more to do with placebo effect.

  9. Obviously not those wirds which are based on real Hadith or are verses of the Koran but other than that - excluding the Qutb of today and his four awtad and the wirds they might give (and no one knows who these people or where they are)-- all of them.
Certainly the ones your average "shaykh" writes and gives to gullible followers or members of the public. By the law of averages some people will get better and ascribe it to the shaykh or the ta'wiz! It's no different to going to a Baba or a witch doctor. Except these people use the name of Islam to get people.
And in all cases when it doesn't work there's a ready-made list of excuses they have -- and which are also written in books of ta'wiz....

  10. Why are you accusing a Muslim of being an atheist? And who are you to try to interrogate me? And as usual you're imagination is wrong. Thirdly, even if I was an atheist - and I'm not - what's it to you?
Sure there will be valid criticisms of aspects of psychology and psychiatry but couldn't you find a more reliable website than one run by the extreme fringes of internet sites?

brother, Prozac has caused OCD and memory disorders in most of the patients. It has severely depleted their previous potentials.

why do some people think they know everything better than everyone else?

and why do some people have to turn every single thread into a 'Hagiography of Free-Thinking' but still not have the nerve to tackle the issue being discussed directly? makes me feel free-thinking is really just 'thinking-free'.

Of ALL the pirs and shaykhs in the world???

What do you mean by placebo effect!!?

Why is your atheism becoming ever more apparent by the post? What's your game?

You, for one, have some psychological disorder relating to insecurities. Why don't you reply to all your other lost posts in other threads before you try answering me?

  15. Prozac has helped more people with mental depression and more effectively than all the tawizes and wirds etc. put together of all the pirs and shaikhs in the world. I'm not saying those things cannot help - they can but they work as a placebo effect!

  16. Why do some people link to such crackpot sites?

Psychiatry is a valuable medical profession based on science and has developed a lot since the time of Freud and Carl Jung, both geniuses who, to correct you, though medical doctors invented psychology which is different from psychiatry. The latter is a branch of medicine. Psychology is different but related to it. It has helped countless millions of people around the world with their mental problems which used to be --and still are amongst some people-- attributed to black magic and jaadu toonay and other gobbledegook.

    --
Differences between psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy
There are significant differences between psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy roles and they tend to deal with different types of problems, although there is also considerable overlap in their work.

Below is a brief description of each of the careers and you can visit our pages on psychology and psychotherapy for more information.

    What is psychology?
Psychology is the study of people: how they think, how they act, react and interact. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and the thoughts, feelings and motivation underlying such behaviour.

Psychology is a discipline that is firstly concerned with the normal functioning of the mind and has explored areas such as learning, remembering and the normal psychological development of children. Psychology is one of the fastest growing university subjects and is becoming increasingly available in schools and colleges.

Psychologists deal with the way the mind works and can specialise in a number of areas, such as mental health and educational and occupational psychology.

Psychologists are not usually medically qualified and only a small proportion of people studying psychology degrees will go on to work with patients.

    What is psychiatry?
Psychiatry is the study of mental disorders and their diagnosis, management and prevention. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have qualified in psychiatry. They often combine a broad general caseload alongside an area of special expertise and research.

    What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is conducted with individuals, groups, couples and families. Psychotherapists help people to overcome stress, emotional and relationship problems or troublesome habits.

There are many different approaches in psychotherapy, or talking therapies, which include:

      • cognitive behavioural therapies
      • psychoanalytic therapies
      • psychodynamic therapies
      • systemic and family psychotherapy
      • arts and play therapies
      • humanistic and integrative psychotherapies
      • hypno-psychotherapy
      • experiential constructivist therapies
A psychotherapist may be a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional, who has had further specialist training in psychotherapy. Increasingly, there are a number of psychotherapists who do not have backgrounds in the above fields, but who have undertaken in depth training in this area.

Consultant psychiatrists in psychotherapy are medical doctors who have qualified in psychiatry and then undertaken a three or four-year specialist training in psychotherapy. Their role is in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with psychiatric illnesses.
