CLARIFICATION OF DARUL ULOOM DEOBAND ABOUT RUJU OF MAULANA SAAD KANDHLAWI
    FEBRUARY 5, 2018
    [IMG]

    Darul Uloom Deoband

There are repeated requests from within India and outside that Darul Uloom Deoband should express its view regarding the Ruju (revocation) of Maulana Muhammad Saad from his comments about the Prophet Musa (peace be upon him).

It is hereby clarified that as far the Ruju of Maulana Muhammad Saad from this particular issue is concerned it is somehow satisfactory, but the ideological divergence of Maulana Muhammad Saad to which Darul Uloom Deoband has pointed out in its Stand cannot be ignored at all; this is because even after so-called Ruju he continues to make several other statements wherein he adopts the same innovative style, baseless conclusions and unwarranted application of Islamic resources (nusus) to his peculiar ideology of Dawah. This is the reason that not only we (the servants of Darul Uloom Deoband) rather the other Ulama-e-Haq are very much worried due to the overall ideological approach of Maulana Muhammad Saad.

It is our assertion that the least diversion from the path of Akabir (pious predecessors) is immensely harmful. Therefore, following the footstep of the predecessors, Maulana Muhammad Saad should be cautious enough in his statements and should stop the personal deductions (ijtihadat) from the Quran and Hadith; since his innovative deductions and interpretations denote as if he is bent to formulate a new group which will be different from the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’at and Akabir. May Allah keep us firm and steadfast on the track of our pious predecessors, Amen!

Those who turn to us in this regard are once again reminded that Darul Uloom Deoband has distanced itself from the internal dispute of Tablighi Jamat and it has declared its impartiality clearly from the beginning. However, whenever people approach Darul Uloom for its views about wrong ideologies and thoughts, Darul Uloom always strives to guide the Ummah considering it its religious duty.

Perhaps first time in its age-old history, the largest Islamic seminary in India Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a categorical fatwa against the Tablighi Jama’at.

Accusing Tablighi Jamaat's chief Maulvi Sa'ad Kandhaulvi of perversion, misinterpretation of Islamic texts and desecration of prophethood of the messengers of Allah, , Darul Uloom Deoband has come up with a fatwa declaring him "misguided" and "deviant" (Gumrah). The Deoband seminary also asked the Tablighi Jam’at chief to repent in the court of God.

In a brazen fatwa, the Deoband clerics have accused the Tablighi Jamaat India chief Maulvi Saad Kandhaulvi of aberration, debauchery, misinterpretation of Islamic Shariah, insulting and demeaning prophets and messengers of God. The concluding text in this fatwa issued by the Darul Uloom states:

“It is our religious duty to warn Muslims particularly those with the Tablighi Jam’at that Maulvi Sa'ad Kandhaulvi, the current chief of the Jam’at, is misinterpreting Quran and Hadith.

The fatwa, originally drafted for muftis and Islam jurists, was officially made public by the Darul Uloom Deoband and was posted on its website after it was leaked by Roznama Sahafat, an Urdu daily. Afterwards, several messages and comments were circulated in the media.

The Darul Uloom has alleged that Maulvi Sa'ad Kandhaulvi in his speech at recently held Bhopal Ijtema said that "Markaz Nizamuddin is the most sacred place on the earth after Makkah and Madinah – the two holiest sites revered by Muslims across the world.

The Darul Uloom Deoband also cited the statements attributed to Tablighi Jamaat chief charged with hurling insults against Islamic prophets and messengers. The Darul Uloom said the seminary has received complaints regarding the perverted views of Maulvi Saad Kanadhalvi from various sources including those in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The Darul Uloom has also informed that Islamic clergy across the Indian subcontinent have expressed concerns over the way Maulvi Saad Kandhaulvi is propagating his perverted and distorted views among the Muslims. “We can’t remain silent and a mute spectator when Maulvi Saad Kandhaulvi continues to disseminate his perverted views and wrong interpretations about Islam in large gatherings”, the Darul Uloom said.

“After a close analysis of his speeches we have come to the conclusion that Mualana Saad Kandhaulvi has gone astray and he must repent without any delay”, the fatwa said appealing to the Tablighi Jamaat seniors to take immediate corrective measures to save the group from going astray.

“If corrective measures are not taken immediately, we fear that a large chunk of Muslims associated with Tablighi Jamaat will also go astray and off the track”, the decree said.

Questions and objections over Tablighi Jamaat and its preaching style have been raised in the past as well. It is also alleged that Fazail-e-Amaal - the book Tablighi Jamaat advises its followers to read during gatherings, contains many things which do not have any basis in Quran and Sunnah.

Recently, Maulvi Saad Kandhaulvi has got much notoriety as he made a flimsy and untenable comment in a speech held at Bhopal Ijti’ma (annual congregation), that Markaz Nizamuddin is the most sacred place on earth after Makka and Madina – the two places revered by Muslims across the world.

Going by the news report published in Inquilab, dated December 6, 2016, the Deoband seminary claims to have received complaints regarding the ‘perverted views’ of Maulvi Saad Kanadhalvi from various places including Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Darul Uloom also said that scholars across the Indian subcontinent should express their concerns over the way Maulvi Saad Kandhaulvi is propagating his perverted and distorted views among the Muslim masses.

“After a close analysis of his speeches we have come to the conclusion that Maulana Saad Kandhaulvi has gone astray and he must repent without any delay”, the decree said also appealing to the Tablighi Jamaat seniors to take immediate corrective measures to save the group from going astray.”

It’s perhaps, first time in its entire history that Darul Uloom Deoband has come out openly against the Tablighi Jamaat and its chieftain.

According to Roznama Sahafat, Maulvi Sa'ad is reported to have expressed a vulgar view in an earlier statement leaked by the Urdu daily. He said:

"Using Mobile phones with an Islamic app or Qur'an app is worse than fornication (Zina). Thus, those even the Ulema and Islamic clerics who enter washrooms with such mobile phones in their pockets are worse than the fornicators (Zinaakaar)".

DARUL ULOOM DEOBAND'S BAN ON TABLIGHI JAMAATH:

In December 2016, the Darul Uloom Deoband issued a fatwa that probably stands as the strongest indictment of Maulana Saad’s leadership, painting it as both deviant and divisive: “Due to a lack of knowledge, [Maulana Saad] has strayed from the path of the majority of the Ulema … in his ideologies and his explanation of Quran and Hadith, which is undoubtedly the path of deviation,” the statement said.

Maulana Saad’s tendency to let his mouth run at times was often discussed within the movement. Those who heard his contentious remarks would not know if they were more than isolated, off-the-cuff remarks. The Deoband fatwa, by listing seven offensive remarks that were investigated and proved to have been made by him, would have greatly damaged his standing, given the source.

In 2017, the Islamic seminary went one step further and issued an order banning TJ from its campus. Restricting the group from conducting any activities inside the “four walls” of the sprawling madressah, the seminary’s administration announced, in August 2017, that any student found involved in Tablighi activity would face punitive action. This is the first time in the seminary’s over-100-years-old history that it has shut its doors on the Tablighi Jamaat, its own ideological offshoot.

The action, said the seminary’s rector Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, was needed to prevent a clash among Deoband students who were getting divided into two camps. “We are not against Tablighi Jamaat or its works but were only worried that our students might get sucked into the fight between the two factions,” Mufti Nomani was quoted as saying in the Indian media. “We tried to mediate between the groups to help them sort out their differences but failed. The ban will be lifted only after the two factions bury their differences.”

In the latest development, Maulana Saad is reported to have admitted to a ‘mistake’ while confined at the Kakrail Mosque (another designated markaz for the movement). Barred from attending the congregation in Tongi, perhaps Maulana Saad may finally repent and correct his ‘mistake’. Darul Uloom Deoband has expressed satisfaction on the reports of repentance and admission of making mistakes by Maulana Saad but has said that it couldn’t ignore the intellectual waywardness which was the basis of Darul Uloom Deoband’s original pronouncement.

    THE BIG DIVIDE:
    {From:Tablighi Jamaat: Divided from Nizamuddin Markaz to Raiwind, Dhaka and London }

    Sajid Iqbal

The Tablighi Jamaat presents itself as a selfless, apolitical, multi-ethnic entity — but from behind this reserved organisational character an internal schism is emerging, with two rival camps fighting for spiritual authority.

The conflict came out into the open recently in the United Kingdom, where TJ has a significant base. In December 2017, police had to be called in repeatedly to separate brawling adherents of the two camps, both of which wanted to lay claim to the Masjid-i-Ilyas, the Markaz or central office of TJ. Things got to such a point that the Markaz was shuttered by the authorities for two weeks to allow tempers to calm down. But the schism has only grown and taken on international dimensions.

One side of the conflict originates from Nizamuddin — the oldest Tablighi centre and the de facto headquarters of the movement in the Indian capital Delhi. Here you will find followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, ameer or head of the TJ shura (advisory council). Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is the great-grandson of Maulana Muhammad Ilyas, the founder of the missionary movement and the grandson of its second ameer. Due to his relationship with the TJ founder and the second ameer, Maulana Saad is revered by many in Tablighi circles.

The other camp resides in Raiwind, Pakistan — home of a sprawling complex which hosts an annual conference that attracts tens of thousands of Tablighi missionaries from all over the world. Some might say this is the rebel camp. Here, leaders have set up their 13-member advisory council, with a more international membership. Haji Abdul Wahab, ameer of Raiwind Shura and one of the senior-most members of TJ’s central leadership council, is the key figure in the Aalmi Shura, or the international advisory council. Raiwind used to be the largest gathering of Muslims outside of Haj but was overtaken by the Tongi jalsa in Bangladesh ever since foreigners became reluctant to visit Pakistan because of security reasons.

Differences between the two camps were simmering beneath the surface for a long time but these differences played out in public only recently. Emotions ran high in London, which is home to leaders and supporters of both factions, over what was deemed acceptable and what was deemed modern.

The sources of discontentment are many but going by the charge-sheet issued against him by Darul Uloom Deoband in their fatwa, Maulana Saad is accused of disrespecting the scholars and earlier prophets and putting forward unacceptable new interpretations of the concepts of the Quran and Sunnah.

Currently there are two TJs operating in London and in the rest of the UK. One adheres to the instructions from Nizamuddin in Delhi and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi and the other follows instructions from the Aalmi Shura centred in Raiwind. These differences were initially kept under wraps but later both factions launched Facebook pages to keep their supporters informed about the latest developments.

TABLIGHI JAMAATH'S TWO BELLIGERENT FACTIONS, THE DEBACLE, THE SHAITAANIYAT AND THE SINISTER PLOTTERS BEHIND THE SCENES:

(Some of the contents including the subtitles posted here are from articles from a deobandi website itself about the current crisis in Tablighi Jamaath)

The real causes for the humiliating current crisis of the Tabligh Jamaat are:

    (1) Ghulu’Haraam excesses. The belief that the Tabligh Jamaat is the sole repository of Najaat (Salvation), and that all the other branches of Islamic Tabligh and Da’wat are superfluous and redundant. Stemming from this attitude are the acts of bid’ah innovated by the Jamaat.

    (2) Israaf – Colossal waste of the ni’mat of wealth. The israaf of the Easter Ijtimas is unparalleled. They shamelessly waste millions and millions of dollars world-wide on these Ijtimas which have assumed carnival proportions. The steel structure replacing the old style tent, used at the recent Rustenburg ijtima cost R25 million, and it failed to serve the purpose of its procurement. It could not ensure the successful operation of the Ijtima against the pouring torrential rain. It was thus a failure. There is no need for wasting such large sums of money, especially when millions of Muslims are suffering all over the world being the victims of genocide committed by the kuffaar.

With what heart and conscience do they squander like shayaateen so much wealth when the Ummah is ablaze? This shaitaani waste is one of the main causes for the elimination of the barkat from the work of the Jamaat.

    (3) COMMERCIALISATION
That the Ijtimas are commercialised is no secret. The Ijtima in Rustenburg was transformed into a veritable mall by the hundreds of stalls. They are operating the Ijtima in emulation of the Ansaarush Shaitaan souks. Besides the carnival ethos created at the Ijtimah, the monetary objective is of primary importance. Much shenanigans are perpetrated behind the commercial facade of the Tabligh Jamaat.

    (4) GHEEBAT
The members of the Tabligh Jamaat across the board indulge in gheebat of the worst kind – gheebat of those Ulama who do not participate in their specific Tablighi programmes.

    (6) HONOURING FUSSAAQ
An evil tendency of the Tabligh Jamaat is honouring such fussaaq who they believe are crowd-drawers by virtue of being eloquent, glib-tongued orators. Thus it is observed that a chap such as Tariq Jamil who flagrantly violates the Shariah with his haraam indulgences being regarded as among the elders of the Tabligh Jamaat.
Tariq Jamil’s flagrant dalliance with the Shiahs, cinema characters, indulgence in television, video and photography, and intermingling with females render him a confirmed faasiq. Instead of demoting him and removing him from any type of shura, the Tablighi Jamaat does the exact opposite.

    (7) THE WOMEN’S JAMAAT
The women’s jamaat is another evil diversion from Siraatul Mustaqeem. This is an evil haraam accretion in emulation of kuffaarwomen’s liberation movements. The Tabligh Jamaat has cast tens of thousands of women in roles which Allah Ta’ala never intended for them.

    (8) THE LEADERSHIP FITNA

The leadership fitnah erupted at a peculiar juncture. It did not occur during a leadership exercise. The Jamaat was not in the process of appointing an ameer. While the Jamaat was continuing along its course, Molvi Sa’d initiated the leadership fitnah. There was nothing to trigger this mischief. This creates the impression that he was for some time planning to stage his coup. Without caring for the appalling consequences in which his evil action would culminate, he was blinded by whatever his objective was, to execute the despicable plot to rent the Jamaat asunder.
