    brother Noori,

I very much respect your sincerity and going the extra mile to maintain maximum adab for the Best of the Creation. It is indeed noble. may Allah reward you.

Yes we must keep trying to make our presentations as best as possible. On the other hand, I wish to state that HOWEVER MUCH we beautify our words, they will never do justice to him, the Beloved of Allah. Ala Hazrat, the most eloquent of all Naat writers, himself sums it up as follows:-

"Aye Raza, khud Sahib e QuraN hai maddaah-e Huzoor,
Tujh se kab mumkin hai phir midHat Rasool ulLLah ki?"

Impossible for Raza! So where do I stand?

    brother aqib,

i came to know that sayyiduna ala hazrat alaihi rahmah has praised shaykh sa'adi because of leaving wazn instead of using disrespectul words just to maintain wazn

sana e sarkar hai wazifa qabul e sarkar hai tamanna
na shayiri ki hawas na parwa rawi thi kya kayse qafiye the

therefore, i take my words back that it is sort of disrespect, it is just a shairi/adabi zaroorat, shair can be criticized for the technicality but there is no sharaiy' harm in expressing the love for Allah azz wa jall and His habib alaihi afDalus salaat wat-tasleem.

however, in no way i had the intention to hurt you, and my correction was a humble support for you to improve your skills. unfortunately things went wrong.

i sincerely apologize, and post edited which hinted that it was disrespect. you were right, it was just a personal opinion.

however, personally i would prefer to learn and then express my love with correct poetry as long as it doesn't break shariy'ah limits.

edited: mistakenly wrote alaihi afDalus salaat wat-tasleem with the name of ala hazrat, astaghfirullaha wa atubu iliahi

Is "Beher" (Meter) a Sharayee Requirement for Naat?

    Dear brothers, as-Salaamo alaykum!

Having posted the above Naat, I found that it was subjected to criticism, and literally chopped into “pieces” (taqtee), for not being in line with the “meter” or “beher”.

I do not doubt the sincerity of my fellow ahleSunnah brothers, nor am I above criticism.

But I found “personal opinions” being posted on matters of Shariah – going so far as to say it is a sort of disrespect to the Holy Prophet if the verses are out of meter. This is a “Red Line” – which I or any momin would dare not cross. May Allah save us all!

I therefore posed the following question, to the Grand Mufti of Ahle Sunnah, Hazrat Allamah Akhtar Raza Khan (damat barakatuhum al-aliya) – for the benefit of all brothers.

    as-Salaamo alaykum.

Hazrat se sawaal hai keh kia Naatiya Kalaam mein urdu shayri ki beher hona laazmi hai?

agar naatiya ashaar me koi bhi lafz galat na ho, pur adab ho, aur ishq e rasool se bharpoor ho aur sharayee lihaaz se us me koi qabahat na ho - to kia tab bhi beher ka hona laazmi hai?

"Zaid" ka kehna hai, keh agar beher na ho, to yeh ek tarah ki gustakhi hai.

"Bakr" ka kehna hai keh urdu to ek jadeed zabaan hai, aur har daur mein urdu me tabdeeli aati rehti hai yahan tak keh jadeed uru shayeri mein begair beher bhi ashaar likhe jaate hain.. aur beher ke qawaneen ka shariyat se ta'alluq nahin. is liye ke huzoor ki tareef har tarah se ho sakti hai, ghazal mein, qaseedah mein, balkeh nasr me bhi jahan beher ke istemaal ka koi tasawwur nahi to kia huzoor ki tareef nasr me na ki jaegi?
aap se guzaarish hai, keh is par wazahat farmayein keh kia naatiya ashaar mein beher sharayee taur par zaruri hai? aur agar na ho, to kia yeh ma-azAllah, huzoor ki gustakhi hogi? jazakAllah khair.

The Grand Mufti immediately said: “NO”. He has then clearly decreed that the meter has a relation only with the poetry, and not with the shariah. If the sharayee factors are maintained, but the meter is not maintained, the poem will still be considered a Naat, and the one who says it is “disrespectful” is wrong in saying so.

The answer can be heard here http://jamiaturraza.com/session/15Dec13/39.mp3

The grand Mufti, unfortunately, has some difficulty in speaking - and instead of saying “Bakr”, he said “Zaid” – but the content is very clear. May Allah bless the Grand Shaykh with a long & healthy life.

i am not sure but i guess it's got something to do with the meter that some naath are very easy to put into multiple tarz while others are not. sometimes it happens that a few words have to be stretched or shortened to mantain the tarz.

I find that most of the naath in the hadaiq are very easy to put into a tarz, even of one's own making.

Al-Uruz wal' Qawafi - Prof. Molana Ashgar Ali Ruhi
Qawaid-e-Urdu - Dr. Molvi Abdulhaq (last chapter on U'ruz/U'rudh)
A practical Handbook of urdu Meter
    Ustaad-e-Shay'iri

    first two are very good
