So I take it that the title attributed to the Indian Shaykh in this age is an exaggerated one by his followers if Shaykh Ahmed Reza is referred to as such.

@abu Hasan @Inwardreflection : I meant Hakim, as in the term Hakim and not the scholar Imam Hakim. A brother once told me that Muhaddith al-Surti alayhi al-rahma would refer to Ala Hazrat as Amir al-Muminin fi al-Hadith.
in tadrib al-rawi, there is a discussion on hafiz. here are a few clips mayhap they are helpful: ajaj khatib in his usul al-hadith: ============= and laqT al-durar, p5:
he didn't mean Hakim al-Nisaburi as a proper name. he meant Hakim as a title similar to Hafiz. Allah knows best.
The title Commander of the Faithful in Hadith no doubt is real and is above the title Hafiz, it is widely accepted to be fittingly used for Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Hajar Asqalani (may Allah have Mercy on Him). He is the only one in latter times to be given this title and Allah knows Best, the rest including Imam Suyuti being Huffaz and even that is a monumental achievement. You say Imam Hakim is the highest in Hadith- no brother this is not correct because the Mustadrak contains many Hadith not at the level of Sahih as mentioned by Dhahabi. Allahu Alam
I don't think there is a particular criteria for Amir al-Muminin fi al-Hadith, rather, it is just a title which is given to a scholar who is of a high caliber in the science of Hadith. For example, Imam Hafiz Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti is referred to as such. Of course, in terms of the ranks of the Muhaddithun, the scholar would have to be on par with the highest which is Hafiz (Hakim is the highest level scholar in Hadith, however, there have not been many, especially in recent times). According to the strongest opinion, a Hafiz is that individual who knows 100,000 Hadith narrations; sanad and matn. Maybe some of the other brothers can share their knowledge regarding this.
Slmz. Who is an 'Amir al-Mu'minin fi al-Hadith'? I was sent a message a few weeks ago about a certain scholar from India who was introduced to me as the Amir al-Mu'minin fi al-Hadith. A few years ago the Shaykh al-Islam fad hit us and now titles such as these are hitting us (common mainstream sunnis). I am curious as to how this title is bestowed in this age?
