'Umar ibn al-Khattab told the Prophet, "I love you more than anything except my soul which is between my two sides." The Prophet replied, "None of you will believe until I am dearer to him than his own soul." 'Umar said, "By the One who sent down the Book on you, I love you more than my soul which is between my two sides." The Prophet said, "'Umar, now you have it!" (al-Bukhari)

now, surely this does not mean 'umar was not a believer before this event. it means that he perfected his faith at this event.

can someone confirm this but i can remember reading about this event that the hadith scholars said that rasulAllah sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam actually granted perfect iman to 'umar radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu.

"None of you will believe until he loves me more than his father, his children and all people."

From Ubayy Ibn K'ab RA. "The believer has four characteristic. If he is afflicted by any misfortune, he remains patient and steadfast. If he is given anything, he is grateful. If he speaks, he speaks the truth. If he passes a judgement on any issue, he is just."
