What about all the tax free money they make from Khatms, nikahs and various other uses such as private classes which they are common for nowadays.

I don't think they are poor after they count all the other money they make.

Without trying to hijack this thread, I have few comments to make on the pay figure. I don't know what the cost of living is in Coventry, but the figures above are more or less at par with what is paid to Imams in some of the London masjids.

The imam of my local mosque draws about £12k per year (and has a house to himself, which I'm not sure is paid by the mosque committee). For someone with over 30 years of selfless service and with a large family to feed and educate, the amount is close to subsistence level. The national minimum wage in UK (from Oct 2010) is £5.93 per hour. The above salary barely meets the minimum wage threshold. I am told that a till worker (with 1 year experience) in Tesco or Argos gets around £17k pa. To pay an Imam less than what a less educated person can earn is a travesty of fairness.

It is not that most masjid committees are short on funds. Unless there has been a recent expansion or investment in some mega-project, most large-sized masjids make enough money through collection. The annual published account (which is rather haphazardly done) of my local masjid shows a bank balance of nearly £1million. I am not insinuating that there is any mismanagemnt of funds but I think there is simple lack of willingness on the part of masjid committee to pay a fair wage. This they justify on the ground that an Imam is here to serve the community and should expect very little in return.

I try to address this unfair treatment of Imams (who deserve better pay) by directly handing money to them for their personal use, instead of giving to the committee. I reckon if dozen others did the same, Imam can get an additional £500 per month (over and above his £1000 monthly wage), which can go a long way in making things better for him.

    Assalamu 'alaykum.

The Imam of Iqra Centre (Coventry) has been discovered to be an undercover Deobandit and so was kicked out of the Masjid. Therfore we have an urgent requirement for a full time Imam. The requirements are that he must be able to speak English and Urdu, and must be clued up about Aqeedah because the current environment is very fragile. The Deobandit is now causing a lot of fitna by pumping people up to go round telling the Sunni awaam that an unfair decision was made in dismissing him.

The appointment will initially be on a trial basis with a view to permanent employment. (The previous guy was on a wage of about 13k a year with free accommadation worth 5k a year, so I assume a similar package will be offered to the new Imam)

If you know anyone that would be interested in applying please reply back asap.

    Jazakallahu Khair
