    imâm ibn kathîr al-makkî: `abdAllâh abû ma`abad al-`aTTar ad-dârî (45 - 120AH)

he was `abdAllâh ibn kathîr al-makkî raDiyAllâhu `anhû , a tâb`yi, who was born in the year 45 al-hijri and became the imam of the qurra of the blessed abode of al-makkatul mukarramah

he learnt the qur`an from `abdAllâh bin saib raDiyAllâhu `anhû the honorable companion of the beloved messenger of allah `alaihi afDalus salâtu was salâm, he also learnt the qir`at from other prominent recitors among the tâbi`yin of his time.

his recitation reaches us through unbroken chains of recitors who mainly trace their chains of authority through two main narrators. he, raDiyAllâhu `anhû passed away in the year 120 al-hijri

the two narrators of his recitation are:

    1. aHmed bin muHammad bin `abdAllâh bin qasim bin naf`i bin abi bazza al-makki ,
he is popularly known as al-bazzî due to his lineage through abi bazza.

he was born in the year 170 al-hijri. He was the muaddhin of the blessed masjid al-harâm where he proclaimed the adhân for forty years. He was the sheikh-ul-qurra of makkatul mukarramah during his time. Numerous students obtained the qir`at through him. The qir`at of imâm ibn kathîr al-makkî reaches him through three narrators.

he, raDiyAllâhu `anhû passed away in the year 250 al-hijri.

    2. abû `amr muHammad bin `abd ar-RaHmân bin muHammad al-makhzûmî al-makki
his title was qunbul and he was born in the year 195 al-hijri.

there are a couple of different opinions behind him getiing his title of qunbul.

the first opinion is that he was from the tribe of qunbalah and hence was known as qunbul, another opinion says that qunbal was actually a medicine which is administered to cattle, and the imam used to use this medicine a lot and hence obtained his title from it.The qir`at of imâm ibn kathîr al-makkî also reaches him through three narrators.

he was extremely pious and taught a lot of recitors in his time. He had to discontinue his teaching due to his old age seven years prior to his death.

he, raDiyAllâhu `anhû passed away in the year 291 al-hijri in the city of kufa.
