i got this from the footnotes of ala hazrat's al-malfuz.

‘Allama Mawlanā Fadle-Haq born at Khairabād on 1212/1797. He was a great scholar and philosopher. He stimulated and encouraged freedom fighters in 1857 at Delhi and was exiled to Indemān where he passed away on 20th August 1861.(for details see Al-Thaurāt al-Hindiyyā (Lahore: 1394/1974) ed. ‘Abd al-Shahid and ‘Abd al-Hakim Sharf.

Back from a trip to Pakistan! Anyway, I am reading Ralph Russell and Khurshidul Islam's book, "Ghalib: Life and Letters" and in this brilliant work it is written, with selections of letters which Ghalib wrote to Mawlana Fazl i Haqq (Khayrabadi), that Ghalib and the learned Mawlana were 'best friends' and 'Ghalib loved and respected him' dearly.

I was quite surprised by this given Ghalib's well known indiscretions vis-a-vis wine and gambling. It also mentions Mawlana Fazl i Haqq's efforts to defend the 'traditionalists' against the Wahabbis and his efforts to get Ghalib to write poems in defence of the Ahle Sunnat position in Farsi (to which Ghalib, out of friendship, obliged). It also mentions the Mawlana as being an expert in Farsi and one of the very few people whose advice Ghalib accepted in regards to his own poems; indeed, it says that when Ghalib was preparing his Diwan (Urdu) for publication he discarded about 'two thirds' of his Urdu poems on the advice of Mawlana Fazl i Haqq Khayrabadi.

The book mentions their close friendship until Mawlana Sahib left Delhi and was eventually sent to the Andaman Islands by the British for his activities in 1857; and it tells of Ghalib's sorrow at this via letters to his friends.

I would like more info about Mawlana Fazl i Haqq if possible.

    Jazak Allahu khayran.

Doing a google search for the Mawlana led me to this interesting link which is, alas, in Japanese: Nagasaki, Nobuko. "The Story of the 1857 Rebellion by `Allamah Fazl-i-Haqq' of Khayrabad"
