A sayyid needs to respect a fellow sayyid in the same way a non sayyid should. The reason being that the respect in reality is for the Prophet alayhisalam. Some sayyid think they are exempt from this. Absolutely repulsive and disgusting how Sayyid Abdul Qadir describes Sayyid Zahid Shah. interestingly, on the hashiyah of sharh ilyas the nikah of sayyidah umm kulthum with sayyiduna umar is mentioned: so the quraysh are equals (kufw/akfa'a) for each other regardless of superiority amongst themselves; and according to (imam) muhammad except in the case of well-known ancestry such as the families of the khilafah* and he probably said that to highlight the prominence of khilafah and to stem any mischief (that may arise due to this). and this is proven by the fact that ali gave his daughter umm kulthum bint faTimah in marriage to umar ibn al-khaTTab and she was far younger (to him); umar was an adawi and she was a hashimiyyah - but both are united in being quraysh. similarly, arabs are equals to each other; though not all arabs are equals to quraysh. and the non-arabs (mawali) are not equals to arabs. the basis for all this is the saying of RasulAllah SallAllahu alayhi wa sallam that: "quraysh (clans) are equals to each other ==============. know, that this specific concept of kufw is only for marriage and that too, for the girl. that is a girl (or her kin) can demand that she be married only to someone her equal. this is because arabs were proud of their ancestry and felt piqued at giving in marriage to someone beneath their status. ------------------------------------------------
sharH ilyas is a commentary on wiqayah; by shaykh maHmud ibn ilyas al-rumi, who completed it in 851 AH (kashf al-zunun). in the nikah of arabs, equality of ancestry is deemed a factor. the quraysh - that is, the children of naDr ibn kinanah - they are equals to each other, even if they are hashimis. and (imam) muhammad said: unless it is a well-known family like the families of the khalifas*; and other arabs are not equals to quraysh - however, all arabs are equals to each other... [sharh ilyas, printed in 1289 AH. ] *the four well-known khalifahs; and thus families are well-known: the siddiqis, the faruqis, the uthmanis; and the alawis: are hanafis and sayyids (the banu faTimah).
