1. i believe qawwali is fully identified with sunnis in this era under the rubric of 'popular islam' (as opposed to taliban/wahabis/deobandi islam).

that clip of pir sayyid naseeruddin naseer :ra: in wajd made my heart leap! especially at 2.31. here is a qawwali written by pir sahib about his great-grandfather [sayyidina mihr ali shah :ra:] and sung by the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

2. I have to admit that nearly everyone i know--scholar and commoner alike--listen to qawwalies. in this matter the ulama of Bareilly Sharif seem to be in a minority in this day and age amongst Sunnis (I'm not saying they're wrong!) There is evidence that the greatest saint --arguably--of the 20th century Pir Sayyid Mihr Ali Shah :ra: also listened to qawwali.

here is aziz mian (ra) singing a beautiful one which was shown on Channel 4 a few years ago:

I think Peer Madni Mian Sahib and Hashmi Mian Sahib are in a Qawali tonight in UK, for those who want to go.

Abu Hasan, how can you compare people in a Qawwali to a "troupe of transvestites"? That absloutely shocked me and I do not even wish to comment on that.

Anyway many other great astanas also do qawwali, here are the buzurgs of the Ashrafi silsila from Kachucha Shareef in a Qawali:

all of these things must be free from evil for it to be permissible to listen:

2. masmū' - the thing being listened to
3. musmá - reciter
4. mismí - instruments
5. masmá - place of listening
6. samā' - listening [time of etc.]

music is haram.

sama'a is permissible only when both the reciter and the listener are qualified - pious and scholarly.

----
i find it revolting when the so-called sama'a is accompanied by music and clapping. astaghfirullah.
