someone said: premature optimisation is the root of all evil.

    ----------------
they have to be sunni sources. we decide. any more questions?

they go to the moderator queue. try posting a resource and wait until we moderators feel like approving it.

surely, you've noticed that we are not in tahir's little dharna, so democracy is not our top priority. admin rules.

we are in 2014. back in 2002, when our company installed a 1TB ESS (known as the shark) it cost us half a million dollars. today, i have 1TB on my notebook, a 2TB USB drive for daily/weekly backups, and another 1TB drive for long term storage. the days of 64kb storage are over; i have 64gb on my phone (an entire 'mobile library').

short answer: let us worry about it, when we cannot take anymore.

    depends.

please note that we do not aim to be the only sunni site; we just wish to be a good resource in addition to other sites; so you come here to find it easily, even if it is retrieved from anywhere.

for example, try to find ihya al-ulum of imam ghazali on marfat.com and download it; and try doing the same on SP.

by cataloguing important videos (such as the excellent dars of alfiyah, i have added for example) or the lectures by shaykh asrar or shaykh monawwar, we have a 'resource' location - which also eliminates undesirable stuff to an extent (which you warn about in your disclaimer).

    ----
no; aqib bhai's site also has files etc. link them here as resources (just a moment; let me go there and check). ok, there. i created a resource for you from your own example.

now you tell us, how can this process be improved.

    wAllahu a'alam.

[ps: this post was written in good humour; hope it is received in a similar good spirit.]

    Salaam.

what are the guidelines for adding resources? i.e how will you prevent the resources section from bloating up? and how would you define a 'resource' if there is a conflict of opinion?

besides, I suppose unless we upload a file directly to SP it will not consume much memory space on the server so would it be preferable to first upload files to a file sharing site and then link to it?

For e.g: Sidi Aqib Qadri has a collection of duroos on Bahar-e-Shariat on his site, or there are fardh-uloom lectures on DI's site and also shaykh buti's('alayhirrahmah) duroos on the Hikam. If we link the individual audio/video files then the list will be too long and the page will take a while to load apart from the fact that the current dimensions of video thumbnails is too large. On the other hand we can download all these files, zip them and then upload them directly or via some file sharing site like 4shared.

Which of the three is better?

    jazakAllah.
    Wassalaam.

please note that the default for this forum is now set to: "latest post first".

so if you click on the thread, the latest post is shown; also the reply box is moved to the top. avid sunniport users will like this.
if you want to see threads in chronological order, you can reset it in your individual preferences page.

i have also removed the smileys in the reply box (they annoy me) by default:

if you want them back, go to your preferences and check the box:

i encourage brothers (and sisters) to explore resources, add your resources etc.

all those who wanted this forum to continue, when we held the polls on the future of sunniport; we encourage to demonstrate your enthusiasm in building a truly resourceful community. we have done our small bit of providing the platform - the larger bit is your participation and contribution. wa billahi't tawfiq.

if you need help, don't hesitate to ask.

many of us know what to do - particularly the younger lot. but our forum is also visited by people who may not know how to use the feature even though they wish they could do so. this is a guide which some may find silly and presumptious, but some others may find useful.

NOTE: others can also contribute to this thread; but STRICTLY, only tips and guides; any other discussion or stray remarks, feel free to start another thread.

    ============

    tip 1

    -------------------------
use a profile pic or avatar. it helps those reading the forum to identify quickly who is writing, and who is saying what. how to make a good one? (we strongly discourage pictures - including pictures of your shaykhs etc., without intending any disrespect. if you find any such avatars, please report.)

you can do it here: http://picasion.com/create-avatar/

simply upload a picture that you want to make an avatar of, and follow the directions. remember not to upload your personal pictures or stuff that you may not want to share on the public internet; use a generic picture or some scenery whatever.

we use 96 x 96 pixel avatar on the forum.

on that site, either you can crop the picture from wherever or resize. crop is straighforward, click on the box and move around; resize portion of the image by holding down ctrl key and dragging your mouse. as in the example attached below.

tip/linguistic note: avatar is a sanskrit word from avatara meaning incarnation - that is, in their mythology their diety takes a different shape and descends (autar, or utar) on earth among humans. hindus worship many gods and among them three are prominent: brahma, shiva (siva in tamils) and vishnu. these are also known as trimurti - the three idols.

they believe that vishnu assumed ten different forms (including a boar) known as dashavatar (dasha=ten, avatar=forms, incarnation). among these ten, they count rama, krishna and buddha as avatars in different ages.

those who are familiar with zakir naik's blabbering might have heard of 'kalki avatar' and that he claims that it is a prophecy foretelling RasulAllah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. the idiot does not realise that he is giving credence to the book (srimad bhagavad gita) and is a self-goal; what if a hindu turns back and says: if you say that kalki is predicted in gita, then why don't you believe in the rest of the avatars? such as krishna and rama? (he did already? oh, well...).

bonus note: remember tariq jamil's theatrical "ya ayyuha'l insaan.." in which he says: "it looks like as if god has come down on earth and holds each person and shakes them saying: what are you doing?"

in other words he expects an avatar like the hindus; diety who has come down on earth.

    ta'ala Allahu `uluwwan kabira.
