the jannisaries: from jaan-nisaar?

  1. i was thinking yesterday about the ottomans and it suddenly occured to me
    that the english term jannisary for the elite soldiers of the ottoman armies, may come from the two farsi (and turkish?) words : jaan nisaar - to sacrifice one's life. thus we could have the noun jaan-nisaar. is it possible this was corrupted to jannisary in english?
