I also read that the Chinese Muslims under the rule of the communist government of Mao Zedong, when they were being persecuted and killed, shortened their names from Muhammad to Mo and Mu and other derivatives of that, to prevent persecution from the government. What would be the ruling upon this?

as per the mufti sahab i asked a few days back, no.

we must respect the names of Allah and Muhammad, 3alaihis salam, and other Islamic names like Raheem, Kareem, Ali etc. regardless if they are written in Arabic or chinese or roman or russian

the thing is if you avoid using the proper names and use only general words, you reduce the chances of people disrespecting the the proper name.

not sure though if disrespecting a paper with God or Khuda written on it carries the same ruling as disrespecting a paper with Allah written on it.

what about hindi words like eeshwar or bhagwan? a lot of Muslims in india when they say bhagwan, refer to the idols of hindus and bash him up. this is something i didn't ask him

i however kind of did not agree with the mufti sahab where he said the name Muhammad can't be shortened to M or Md. or Mohd. for regular people who use it. it is at times a necessity at work to use initials or to assign email id's etc. eg., Muhammad Iqbal Khan will be referred to as MIK in office meeting minutes or so on, or perhaps as mikhan@abc.com in his email id, or his parking space reservation etc. sometimes our mufti sahibaan's rote narration of ahkam and not offering practical solutions after understanding the questions in applied contexts irks me.

yes. that's why i added the edit to my post.

would the ruling differ if sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam was written in roman rather than Arabic?

maybe he doesn't want it to be disrespected as people usually treat posters irreverently...

edit: but then the speaker is named after the Prophet 3alaihis salam, and his name is mentioned
