You got me started. People need to queue for 2-3 hours just to get into a toilet. Even if there is no urgency to use it, people still need to prepare themselves for the day ahead. If anybody needs to use a toilet (having arrived late in the night after long walk from Arafat), they may as well forgo doing any ibadat during that auspicious night. People spend the night on the road, sometimes parked close to bank of water taps. By early morning the taps start overflowing and the entire road gets flooded. Stay in Arafat is a breeze by comparison.

From fiqh point of view there is a difference between Masjid al Haram and Haram. If the Saudi rulers are so interested in increasing the facilities for the hajis , then why are they not improving facilities at Arafat and Mina? Why are people made to stay in tents without fan in Arafat? Why is that hajis from private tour operator and "vip haj" are given these facilities? ( This year they charged 7500 Saudi Riyal for 5 days !) It is known that most of the hajis do not come through this scheme. Why are hajis made to spend night at Muzdalifah at unalloted place on road ? Why can't be toilets be increased at muzdalifah? Why are men and women from different families made to spend night on road in open? ( And wahabis make too much noise on urs gathering, which we any ways condemn ).

The hotels nears masjid al haram , most of it belongs to Royal Saudi family. Of all the main rituals ( arkan) of haj, only tawaf e ziyarat and sai is done inside masjid al haram, which is complete with in 3 hours. The stay at Mina,Arafat and Muzdalifah is much longer, but no facilities are improved here because stay at these places constitute only 5 days maximum in a year. So any investment here will not give them returns. Can we imagine 80 years old people staying in a tent in Arafat with no fan? Where as hotels and malls around masjid al haram is a flourishing business for Saudi royal family because people go for umrah round the year in which stay at arafat, mina and muzdalifah does not occur.

Why is royal palace, which is built on jabal al qubais, after demolishing masjid e bilal/ hilal, not being demolished? We have mist fans around white cooled marble, but no proper stay at Mina? The reason is simple. Umrah is round the year, giving them money in all seasons, where as the places of hajj is for five days only.

Saudi are so shameless that the house of hazrat abu bakr siddiq radi allah anhu must be demolished and the gates in masjid al haram needs to be named after king saud, king abdul aziz and fahd! Why is that every expansion is named after the Saudi king, when the houses of sahaba are demolished? No body should be under the illusion that Saudis are doing it for the sake of haj pilgrims. The facilities are meant for umrah pilgrims which gives them money round the year.

    yes, that is indeed what I mean;

the expansion of the Haram gives them the chance to demolish the old buildings, purchase the lands to build massive 5 star hotels, shamelessly charge exorbitant rates, and push away the Haji's who cannot afford it to the far-flung areas. no points for guessing who are the owners of these towers.

I personally remember the days (not more than 5 years ago) when one could rent a room of four beds, say within 200 meters of the Haram for SAR 200, during Ramadan. Now the same is not available for less than SAR 400 even in Muharram. For cheap rates, you have to be at least 800 meters away.

another deceit the hotel managers use is to advertise the room online as "4 beds - 20sq meters" - when you have booked it online, to your dismay you find that it is only 12 sq meters, originally of 2 beds, with another 2 smaller beds inserted into it - leaving no room even for a single man to offer prayers.

and all restaurants, are now actually "fast food" outlets, in the food courts of these huge towers.

it is very much a lucrative "business".

how so brother? large numbers of hajis need a bigger mosque but people are lamenting the old days of the cheaper hotels and the more mediocre shops selling trinkets and stuff. heck even with western chains, they could've opted for more budget chains like red roof inn or super 8 or something* along those lines but the sheraton, four seasons, and the ritz etc simply scream "gold diggers" left, right and center. (*mentioning them only to show the extremity of love of money, i don't wish for any kafir run chains to profit off of the holy lands. the oberoi hotel in Madinah is something we should all be ashamed of, a hindu surname lit up in the Prophet's 3alaihis salam backyard, and afaik, the hindu owner has direct shares in it).

unless you mean they go hand in hand for the powers that be to fill their coffers.

biggest bottleneck outside the masjid precincts is around Safa palace, which will remain untouched. If safa palace is demolished then the flow of crowd can be better regulated. That area is cordoned of late, but 5 years back it used to take hour to go from one end (sacred birth place) to misfalah.

To be honest, the masjid expansion on the current site will do nothing to reduce the congestion in mataf. The main constraint in mataf has been (and will always be) on the Maqam-e-Ibrahim side (between hajr-e-aswad and rukn-e-Iraqi) given the fixed space between sa'ee and mataf area. No amount of lateral expansion on the opposite side will help. Yes, vertical expansion such as tawaf bridge and higher levels will ease tawaf congestion.

you are right - but building large hotels and malls without expanding the Haram would be useless too. they go hand in hand.

    Three things to ponder:
    1. They cleared an entire mountain (Shubeikha) to build more 5 star large hotels, and to expand the Haram - and left the Safa palace (residence of royal family) untouched - but they deemed it necessary to demolish the sacred Birth Place of the Holy Prophet (which is on the side of Safa Palace).

    2. the crane that crashed down, was on the side of the Birth Place of the Holy Prophet and the Safa palace.

    3. It happened on the fateful date - 9/11.

sorry that's crazy. you got it backwards.

the construction and expansion of the Haram are much needed considering the rising numbers of the hajis in these times. and considering the place, it is simply impossible to shut off all visitors and finish off the construction before letting people in, as such projects take a good few years to complete, even if the site is ONLY a construction site with no visitors. what then to say about the Masjid Al-Haram where people are present 24/7. rulers have expanded the two Holy Mosques as per requirement over the ages.

the wanton construction and needless expansion to satisfy the official egos and fill their coffers is on the OUTSIDE of the Haram, all the malls and the franchised designer hotels and the versace and dkny and fredricks stores just outside the Haram.

While this is unlikely a case of sabotage or willful neglect, authorities should have taken precaution against pitching the gigantic crane booms so close to the Masjid al-Haram especially given the weather condition. This is an accident that could have been prevented.

One who comes out of his house for performing Hajj or Umrah and dies, Allah will grant the reward of Hajj or Umrah for him until the Day of Judgment. [Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman, Vol. 6, Page 15, Hadith 3806]

There will be no accountability for the one who departs for Hajj or Umrah and dies on the way. He will be ordered to enter Paradise. [Tabarani, Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, Vol. 4, Page 111, Hadith 8835]

    Crane collapse in Makkah Mukarramah

This had to happen one day. Unfortunate that it took a huge toll in this peak season. Such wanton construction and needless expansion (on that side of mataaf); all to satisfy official ego.
