16 years for women; 25 or 30 or 33 for men. Subhaan Allah! The Holy Prophet did not add the words خير منهما for Syeduna Ali when he said that Syeduna Abu Bakr and Syeduna Umar are the leaders of the elderly men in Paradise. (Allah be pleased with them all).
the term "youth" may not really mean "youth" as in age; because both of them - raDiyAllahu anhuma - were in middle age when they were martyred. it may be used as an idiom to mean those whose exploits were befitting young men. 'fata' meaning 'young man' is used to describe a chivalrous, valiant, brave and daring man, even if he is old. everyone in jannah will be of the same age - and all will be young. none of them will be old or in middle-age. the hadith could mean that they are the leaders of those who were martyred fighting valiantly against injustice. it is also said that it might mean they are leaders of those who were young at that time (when it was said). or it could mean they are leaders of people of paradise except prophets and khulafa al-rashidin. the hadith is reported by tirmidhi, vide mishkat; imam ahmad from abu sayid al-khudri; Tabarani from hazrat umar, from hazrat ali, from jabir and from abu hurarayrah; tabarani in mu'jam al-awsat from usamah ibn zayd; from bara'a; ibn adi in kamil from ibn masu'ud; ibn majah and Hakim from ibn umar; Tabarani from qurrah and from malik ibn al-Huwayrith; Hakim from ibn mas'ud [in mustadrak]. also reported by imam ahmad, abu ya'ala, ibn Hibban, Tabarani and Hakim from abu sa'yid [al khudri]. raDiyallahu anhum ajma'yin. see mirqat under hadith #6163. vol.11/p.314. wAllahu a'alam.
Imams Hasan and Husayn were given glad tidings of being leaders of the youth of jannah. But won't everyone in jannah be middle aged? How do hadith commentators explain?
