I know Bro. Abul Hasan will post a better, much better, reply, but I was reading about something similar to this in November 2004's Kanzul Imaan from Dehli.

It quotes A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmad Rida Khan Barelwi rahmatullah ‘alaih, Sadrush Shari'ah Mufti Amjad Ali rahimahullah, Malik-ul-Ulama Maulana Zafaruddin Bihari rahimahullah and Mufti Akhtar Raza Azhari damatbarkatuhum. It mentioned fatawa from these luminaries about whether the aghniya (rich) can eat from the Khatam food.

The answer given is that this is not Sadqah Wajiba, it is Sadqah Nafilah, hence, both rich and poor can eat from it. The impermissible aspect of the Khatam is when there is a ‘Da’wat’ for people to eat from the Teeja. Da’wat’s are for happy moments, this is a sad time. Shaami and others are also quoted.

So, perhaps Imam Rida’s fatwa is against the da’wat aspect.

First of all i want to congratulate the brothers involved in setting this forum up. It is certainly something we have been lacking.

I have asked this question on various forums but as yet I haven't recieved any feedback. The question is as regards the stance of Ala Hazrat(ra) on khatams that are held following the passing away of an individual. As most of you will be aware khatams are held on various days upto the 40th day since the deceased has passed away.

The reason I am compelled to ask is I have heard that in Fatawaa-e-Ridhwiya Ala Hazrat(ra) has declared it haraam for anyone to eat from the deceaseds' household after the third day of the deceaseds death unless zakaat could be paid to them.

It is common practice amonst Sunnis from the sub-continent to hold khatams in which various foods are served to guests who are ineligible to recieve zakaat.

I would really appreciate if anyone who has access to Fatawaa-e-Ridhwiyya or any other works of Ala Hzarat(ra) on this issue could shed some light on this issue.

    Jazakallah Khair
