As far as I remember in childhood I did my bayah to Hazrat Jamal Raza Khan (Maternal grandson of huzor mufti azam e hind ),would I still be considered his mureed ?

The meaning of Bay’at or pledging spiritual allegiance is to be totally sold, which means to surrender yourself totally to a Spiritual Master (Murshid) to guide you to Allah. Bay’at should be done on the hands of that person who possesses the following attributes or else bay’at will not be permissible. These are:

    1. First and foremost, he must be a Sunni Muslim holding correct Islamic beliefs.

    2. He should at least have that amount of knowledge which will enable him, without the assistance of anyone, to extract answers to questions relating to Islamic Jurisprudence from Islamic books.

    3. His Silsilah (Chain of Spiritual Order) must be directly linked to the Holy Prophet ﷺ without a break in the sequence.

    4. He must not be a Faasiq-e-Mu’alin (One who openly commits transgression and sin).

Thing is though brother it's like 'some' mureeds give an impression that if you give bayah that your life issues, trials and tribulations will suddenly vanish, which is a false hope as the anbiyah faced the most trials and tribulations yet we're the closest to Allah swt

of course there's barakah but I suppose it's from what I've seen personally and again I agree with you brother that not every mureed is like this as that would be an unfair comment hence why I said 'some'

Do you do bayah if you don't mind me asking brother? If so, to who?

I really don’t get this rampant skepticism. Why should the default be that people will be misled?

Perhaps many people don’t do their wird but many people do them too. It’s really unfair to generalise. Say one takes bayah and nothing happens, the least that can happen is that they’ll still benefit from their Shaykh’s duas. I was recently reflecting on this and realised that if one doesn’t have a spiritual guide, our kids will be completely alien to the concept of turuq.

It’s unfair to paint every Shaykh with the same brush and scare people from having a spiritual guide by brandishing words like cult or spiritual abuse (for what is sometimes mere loyalty or khidmah).

That’s on the mureed. Not the Shaykh himself. Someone once said to me that the mureed is not perfect. He is a work in progress. So why attribute the mistake of a mureed to the Shaykh or the entire tariqa?

Yes it's true when it comes to the wirds/wazeefa/prescription or whatever you want to call it

Another thing is it seems like some mureeds go out on the recruit and can put pressure on people to bayah asap

like I've had a family member who I met at a gathering of his shaykhs and he's like give him your hand, I'm like I don't even know your Shaykh yet and I would need to spend time with him first

Anyone know why someone just jump straight in with bayah just based on reputation of hear say instead of actually spending time with the Shaykh first?

Thanks I don't know who he is but will try and search just for a bit of background info thanks jazakAllah khayran

Ill be honest i've been lurking on this forum on and off for years and maybe I'm getting the wrong end of the stick but it seems there's sometimes conflict between mureeds and some shaykhs, you know like a power struggle?

I could be wrong it's just the jist I get

The issue with this would be, for the layman, who are the major ulema? The famous ones? The local dars nizami graduate who comes to the local masjid and gets introduced as Allamah Hazrat Maulana Mujaddid so and so? I think it's so difficult to not be misled especially for the average person and maybe it's better for most people not to give bayah at all due to the (perhaps overwhelming) possibility that they'll fall into some cult. Most people who give bayah don't do anything anyway- it's not like they'll follow the wird and give their shaykh weekly updates. In my experience, anyway.

I think one good indicator is if leading ulama accept him as a shaykh in the first place.

Take Mufti e Azam Hind: major ulama became his murids.

    Assalamualaikum wah rahmatullahi wah barakatuhu

So registered here and asked this question few years ago

Wanted to ask when doing bayah how do you determine whether a Shaykh is genuine?

I mean there's many charlatans out there
