The issue centres around whether this alcohol or indeed any alcohol is deemed to be "impurity" or "Nijasat". Certainly, there are Salaf who did not classify alcohol as impure (I think Imam Rabiah is one of them) and there appears that the reason for this is that had alcohol been deemed as impure the people of Medina would not have poured it out onto the streets when it was prohibited by Allah and the command was given and conveyed by Allah's Messenger SalAllahu Alaihi wa Sallim (Muslim). Then the issue arises of what to do when the item is not for consumption which is another area that many people overlook (should we club everything on this topic together?) see Reliance for example and some notable Scholar's verdicts:

    "Reliance of the Traveller" states:

    e.14 p. 95

    Filth means...

    (7) any liquid intoxicant (n: including, for the Shafi'i school, anything containing alcohol such as cologne and other cosmetics, though some major Hanafi scholars of this century, including Muhammad Bakhit al-Muti'i of Egypt and Badr ad-Din al-Hasani of Damascus, have given formal legal opinions that they are pure (tahir) because they are not produced or intended as intoxicants. [End of quoted text from the Reliance.]

I think what I'm trying to say is, it is not as clear cut and certainly blanket ruling everything on the topic with "it's a necessity" does not appear to be correct but just inviting people to just go with what suits their ego rather than focusing on what's better for Taqwa. On the other hand there appears strong evidence to distinguish edible from non edible in the debate.

Which alcohol is being referenced here? Or does this include every single -OH group?

I read the answer in the link: why is this in the category of Umoom e Balwa? Is this being done by anybody & everybody, and that one cannot avoid it under any circumstances????

Kindly listen to the following (just 3 of the many) answers by Shaykh Mufti Akhtar Raza sahab (daamat barakatuhum al-aaliyah):-

I fail to understand how is "Umoom-e-Balwa" applicable to this situation. It's a poor fatwa (without getting into the discussion of denat alcohol being halal or not).

Why must perfume or face cream be used? For what purpose? Why can't one refrain from its use? For one, there are substitute products available (can't attar be used for perfume?), and most importantly why can't one avoid it altogether.

Can this "umoom-e-balwa" excuse not be extended to anything commonly considered haram - such as interest taking/giving, consuming alcohol etc.?

Is it permissible to use products such as face masks and moisturising creams which contain alcohol in it?
