one thing i forgot to mention - as i moved to the hadith explanation.

rakhshan hilaal - means the crescent shines.

the crescent is harbinger of a new month, of celebration, of eid; and a metaphor for change - the dawn of a new era.
and it is that day in badr - with a constellation of stars surrounding the full moon - they heralded the dawn of a new era.

gird e mah dast e anjum mein rakshaN hilaal...

and the rise of the crescent - which banished the darkness of disbelief and injustice on the battlefield of badr.

    =====
    additional explanations:

hilal also means the crescent shaped whiteness on one's nails, and it is this alahazrat has alluded in another verse describing the beauty of his fingernails:

eid e mushkil kushayi kay chamkay hilaal
nakhunon ki bisharat pay lakhon salam

the crescent of the festival of the easing of hardship shine,
a billion salutes on the glad tidings given by his blessed fingernails..

    -----
    so the hilaal, in
gird e mah dast e anjum mein rakhshaN hilal

can also mean the blessed hands of the Prophet ﷺ

as he has said in another verse:

do qamar do panjah e khur, do sitaray das hilaal
unkay talway, panjay naakhun paa e at'har yeediyaan

two full moons, two suns, two stars and ten crescents
his (two) soles, his open palms, his feet and heels, and his fingernails

[open palms with five fingers spread are like a sun]

    ---
one of the meanings of hilaal is dust. and it is here that the Prophet ﷺ, threw a handful of dust which is described in the qur'an as: "you did not throw it when you threw; rather it was Allah who threw it" []

    tag v31p146b.png

so the entire couplet can also be read as the description of RasulAllah ﷺ himself present in the battlefield of badr.

gird e mah, dast e anjum mein rakhshan hilaal
badr ki daf' e zulmat pay lakhon salam.

the allusion to dust (as one of the meanings) from his hand (dast) can also be drawn; the first word can also be read as gard=dust. these words are hints to other aspects of the event, though they are not direct translations.

    ----
hilal also has another meaning: a spell of rain, and is an allusion to the rain that fell that night.

    see taj al-arus, v31 p.146

alahazrat describing the event of badr:

    badr1.png

gird e mah, dast e anjum mein rakhshaaN hilaal
badr ki daf' zulmat pay lakhon salam

surrounding the moon, in the hands of the stars, dazzling crescents
a billion salutes on the full moon [badr] that banished darkness

amazing word play in these couplets as usual

    mah - hilal - badr
moon - cresent - full moon

gird e mah - around the moon, surrounding the moon are

dast e anjum - here dast may be used to mean "group of stars" or a constellation.
or the literal: dast=hand: thus, "in the hands of the stars"

the crescent is also a metaphor for sword; so in the hands of these stars {as said in another hadith: "as'haabi ka'n nujum = my companions are like stars} are swords and they are rallying towards the moon - i.e. RasulAllah ﷺ

rakhshan = dazzling, shining; rakhshan hilaal = dazzling swords.
as iqbal has said in his lines:"khanjar hilal ka hai qawmi nishan hamara"

badr = full moon; but it is also the place where the first decisive battle for truth and islam was fought:

the full moon banishes darkness, literally; the battle of badr banished the darkness of disbelief, ignorance and tyranny that had enveloped the land. so, a billion salutes to the companions - ahl badr.

    ---
this is actually a reference to the sahih hadith of bukhari, 3952 where the sahabi miqdad said "we will surround you - to protect you and to fight for you"

    bukhari, 3952.png

ibn masuud said: i was present with miqdad ibn aswad in that battle; and that i should be his companion is far beloved to me than everything else. he [miqdad] came to the prophet ﷺ and he was praying against the idolators and he said:
[miqdad said:] we will not say as the people of Musa alayhis salam told him: "you and your Lord Almighty both go and fight.." [mai'dah, v24]. rather, we will fight with you, for you; on your right, on your left, and in front of you, behind your back. [i.e. from all sides]

[ibn masuud says:] i saw the Prophet ﷺ and his face lighted up and he was pleased.[ibn masuud says:] i saw the Prophet ﷺ and his face lighted up and he was pleased.

    now read the couplet again:

gird e mah, dast e anjum mein rakhshan hilaal
badr ki daf' e zulmat pay lakhon salam.
