a wise man proportions his belief according to the evidence...you look at the evidence upon which a kulliya is based! then decide whether to accept it. i believe hazrat muwaiya to be a sahabi but in fighting Imam Ali He was a rebel/baghi...thats it otherwise it would prove that Imam Ali judgement was wrong and His efforts were futile....al-haqo ma Ali....

it is possible that it is qaziya mahsura mujiba kulliya or perhaps a qaziya mohmila! the point is that a claim is based on evidence either transmitted or rational.

if you promise not to behave like a jew or a salafi (choose what suits your fancy and leave what it does not) i can quote what taftazani said about sayyiduna mu'awiyah raDiyAllahu `anhu. don't tell me that you don't read his kalimah, if i do so.

[i wonder why then people act as if it wahy when they quote imam taftazani's cursing the fasiq yazid]

for instance, i give you two examples:

hareez bin osman, a reporter of bukhari sharif who used to send lanat on Imam Ali 70 times in the morning before fajr.

imran bin qattan: he was rais al-khawarij and written poems in praise of abd al-rehman bin muljim...the guy who martyred our Imam.

for reference check asma ar-rijaal books.

imam bukhari includes the chapter of zikr of mu'awiya in the book of manaqib.

there are 8 ahadith in imam bukhari's sahih that are narrated by sayyidina ameer mu'awiya radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. we all know imam bukhari radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu only includes thiqa and extremely truthful narrators.

'La ashba Allaho batanahu'......either deny the hadith or accept it but the meaning of it is that 'May Allah not fill his belly'.....

as for the other thread, it is ironic that you allow for Rehmat al-alameen(S) to ,nauzobillah, hallucinate but here you do your utmost not to let Hazrat muawiya over eat as Rasul Allah(S) said it!! the context is such that eating came before meeting Hazur Paak(S).

and also please note that at origins of this thread there is scanned book by molana irfan sahib and on page 24-26 he showers praises from fabricated and daif ahadith whereas it would have much easier for him to present this very hadith and translate it as your expert suggests but even he knew that it might back fire ...so the question is why didn he 'mention' it?? it is not that he didnt know about....Did Rasul Allah(S) say it so we do khayanat to what He(S) said and not tell the whole story??

Weren't you just the one rejecting a hasan hadith in another thread (about our Master (sallAllahu `alaihi wasallam) being affected in any way by any type of magic) due to certain bad implications you thought it had against our Master (sallAllahu `alaihi wasallam)? Why not the same vigor for trying to understand this hadith of a companion of the Prophet (sallAllahu `alaihi wasallam)? Where did you get the words "may Allah not fill his belly" from? Which translation may i ask? Have you even checked the arabic to see if it is correctly translated? From what i have been told - by knowlegable translators - it can also be translated as "May his sustenance be without end".

in logic, when people cannot justify something with istadlal then they rely on genetic fallacy known as ad hominem.....rather than tackling the question they begin typical salafi najdi methods of approach.

above is from sahih muslim and 'May Allah not fill his belly' are not the words of a shaykh but of the highest of the high Hazrat Mohammed Mustafa(S) so if you have a complaint please dont make it to me.

I find it extremely worrying that some 'murids' of a certain shaykh (may Allah Protect him) find it extremely distasteful when one mentions anything good about Amir Mu'awiyah (ra).
It is odd to me, because i have never seen the shaykh himself utter anything similar to likes of what some of his 'murids' utter.

it is well known fact that there is not a single sahih hadith in praise of hazrat muawiya; this is the very reason that imam bukhari whilst praising other sahaba kiraam calls it 'fadhail' of such and such but when it comes to hazrat muawiya, he only calls it ' zikr of muawiya'...however, i have heard numerous speeches of ulema where they praise him but none mention the following sahih hadith of sahih muslim...why?

Ibn Abbas reported: I was playing with children that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) happened to pass by (us). I hid myself behind the door. He (the Holy Prophet) came and he patted upon my shoulders and said: Go and call Mu'awiya. I returned and said: He is busy in taking food. He again asked me to go and call Mu'swiya to him. I went (and came back) and said that he was busy in taking food, whereupon he said: may Allah not fill his belly! Ibn Muthanna, said: I asked Umm Umayya what he meant by the word Hatani. He said: It means" he patted my shoulders". (Book #032, Hadith #6298)

imam shihab al-Din khafaji writes in naseem al-riyad sharh shifa' that:

    ومن يكن يطعن فى معاوية

    فذاك كلب من كلاب الهاويه

whoever talks badly about mu'awiya [radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu] is a dog from the dogs of hell.

some of the shi'a influenced talk lightly when talking about the blessed companion sayyidina ameer mu'awiya radiyallahu ta'ala anhu. the lion of ahlus sunnah, the lover of imam ahmad raza, shaykh 'irfan shah mash'hadi adaamAllahu barkaatuhum has explained the sunni view on this sahabi, the jannati, the katib e waHi.
