When people move away from Orthodoxy they fall in the world of make believe. They will talk of the unseen as if they have access to it. An extreme form of this is Harun Yahya. Here he talks about matters of the unseen as if he has direct access.

    Apparently freemasons have become believers:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4O1qwUx4x8

Then you have the followers of Ahmad Hassan in Basrah:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj-S_Nrximo

They tell you to pack everything and join the 'Imam':

They reject the fact they are a cult.

    A Translation of Fadiah al-Batinyah wa-Fadail al-Mustazhariyah of al-Ghazzali By Richard J. McCarthy.

This is the book to which Ghazali refers in the Munqidh, Para. 61 (Note 122). I translate its title as The Infamies (Enormities) of the Baُtinites and the Virtues (Merits) of the Mustahirites. By the Mustahirites, Ghazali means the reigning Caliph, al-Mustazhir Billah, and his family. He was Caliph from 478/1094 to 512/1118.

The book was partially edited and translated by Goldziher in 1916. He used a manuscript of the British Museum. The complete text (which is the basis of my translation) was edited by Dr. ‘Abdurrabman Badawi, Cairo, 1964, who used the British Museum manuscript and another of the Qarawiyin Mosque in Fez (Morocco). Goldziher’s book contains a good deal of useful and interesting information.

My translation is fairly literal, without, I hope, being too barbarous. Some parts are summaries of certain sections completely translated in Goldziher’s splendid book. I have added certain explanations, references, and alternate translations in square brackets.

Typical style of keeping the mureed in the group and mind controlled. Here he talks about how to recognise the Mahdi and that his cult is the only valid cult:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yoGHNtPKWw

They name these kind of gatherings as 'suhbat'.

It is bizarre how 'sufis' claim knowledge of matters of the unseen, and base their beliefs on matters of the unseen which cannot be verified. This is done in order to create a mystic aura so people are kept in the confines of their group.

It is their word against each other. This individual claims knowledge of Imam Mahdi:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKVxuGyymnA

Dreams, esoteric unveiling, knowledge of the unseen, visions of the angels etc, are all ploys used by people to keep the aura of mysticism. While the 'mureed' will know of dreams and visions he will never know the fundamentals of Islam, Seerah, and other aspects of Islam.

Basically an obsession with mystical knowledge (which no one attains after being with the shaykh for fifteen to twenty years).

Interesting documentary on delusions of cult leaders and the personalities of cult leaders:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0JgFEOuVFU

There is also a cult leader thermometer, by which the danger of a cult leader can be measured.

Cult involvement is perhaps best seen as similar to an addictive drug.
On the one hand, it can provide ecstatic highs, feelings of well-being or
boosts in confidence. On the other, it can lead to a total dependence, so
that it is focused on at the expense of one's original life.
Like drug addicts, cult members can end up giving money to fund
their search for the next peak experience. If they get very deeply involved,
they can, in effect, give up their moral and intellectual judgements in
favour of a blind acceptance of what the cult dictates.

    Counterpoint

I do not know if anyone else has noticed that this thread has swung a wee-bit toward materialism. Here's a another perspective:

It was relayed on the authority of Abu Dhar al-Ghifari, radiyallahu'anhu, that the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said, of what he related from his Lord, magnified and exalted be He, Who said:

"O My servants, I have made oppression unlawful for Me and unlawful for you, so do not commit oppression against one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me and youl will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the Jinn of you to become as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that will not increase My Kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the Jinn of you to become as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that will not decrease My Kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the Jinn of you were to rise up in one place and make a request of me and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, anymore than a needle decreases the ocean when put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah and let he who finds other than that blame no one but himself." [Muslim]

All those people in the documentaries, if they really are as clever as they make themselves to be, how come they are still non-muslim? Why has their critical thinking skills not brought them to Islam? They are full of hot air and really unfortunate.

A simple minded muslim is so superior to them that they do not even compare to his greatness. "This is the fadl of Allah" which He grants to whom He wills!

    Allahumma hadina fi man hadayt.

    Ameen.

    Wassalaam.

Rejection of cults within sufism should not be mistaken with a rejection of tasawwuf. This is where I disagree, as cults are found in all walks of life and not only amongst people associated with tasawwuf. It maybe intensified when it revolves around an individual but the principles remain the same. The guidelines presented by Ala Hazrat are sufficient as was covered in the thread about 'Fatawa Ifriqa'.

'Sufism is elite of the elite'. While this statement may be true for the likes of Abdul Qadir Jeelani (Allah be well pleased with him) many try using this for their 'tareeqa' in the West:

    http://vimeo.com/67165481

He states 'Not all Muslims are Muminin' Listen @ 4 minutes onwards. He states 'The Elite of Muslims are Muminin' ie people who are in their sufi cult.

This individual is from the Dallas cult which has links with freemasons as posted above.
