It's directly linked from the University of Birmingham's website where they host these dissertations, a link I got from the British Library's online dissertation database EThOS.

  3. Its copyrighted so do you have Ijaza to disseminate it like this and for anyone to read it?

I don't think there's need to delete the thread. Let's keep it for the sake of record.

I am curious to see what the "appreciation" consists of and how the "impartiality" plays out in favor of the orientalists.

If I find anything interesting I may update here.

Noted, @Unbeknown can you delete this thread as I don't know if there's more of this so-called 'analysis' in this paper? Concerning, and thus is the issue with academia today.

    wa 'alaykum as salaam

But I don't like his tone. In the Introduction when explaining about his "unique and creative" commentary he states the following:

Why is a robust rebuttal of criticism against hadith science as practiced by Muhadditheen an "extreme"?

Which seems to indicate that being a Muslim "first and foremost" automatically makes one partial and that it somehow compromises the objectivity of the task at hand - and unless one approaches the literature as a "researcher", he will be biased in his research and since no one has done this before, all usul al hadith literature we have so far is tinged with bias which is "unavoidable" unless you practice a certain "not a muslim first" mindset and no one before has thought of that.

    what's going on here?

    As Salāmu ʿAlaykum,

Dr. Hafez Ather Azhari did his PhD dissertation on the Nuzhah which includes a full translation of it here in pdf.

    From the introduction:
"In his introduction to Nuzhat al-naẓar, Ibn Hajar explains that his contemporaries asked
him to offer a brief overview of ‘ilm al-hadith. Ibn Hajar duly obliged in the form of
Nukhbat al-fikar, but he was then later asked to expand on this work. The result was
Nuzhat al-nazar fi tawdih nukhbat al-fikar. Though in reality the Nuzhah is two separate
works (Nuzhat al-nazar and Nukhbat al-fikar), Ibn Hajar wrote his final piece in an
amalgamated style.2 The result is that it can be read as if it is one piece of work."
