Me and you have our fair share of differences but I agree with your last post almost totally. I find the commercialisation of sufism distasteful too. The only thing I will say though is that if you are going to fly to Spain and stay in luxury hotels/resorts to do a rihla course -- of course it will be expensive and someone has to pay for it so why not the mureeds?

Gone are the likes of Pir Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (q) who used to pay for the upkeep of his mureeds/students so that they wouldn't be forced to stop learning on the Path for financial reasons...

It is not just them though, almost all modern-day pirs/shaykhs/ use the religion to fleece the people. Exceptions exist but are rare. From experience I have seen pirs make a face of disgust when a poorer mureed gives them, say, a tenner instead of a 100 pound note!

there's nothing more blissful than the haqeeqah one sees on a few thousand dollar rihlah, through a $300 swarovski-crystal laden and hand carved 3oud-wood masbaha at a luxury bed 'n breakfast in the canadian country side, looking out at the wonderful fall colors!

Has anyone ever wondered how these pirs remain so well groomed (in a manner of speaking)? We all thought Tahir Jhangwi was the only one cutting Christmas Cakes, putting up his stockings and getting the tree out for the 25th; but it seems that Pir Niaz and Pir Fiaz also get the ocassional visit from the big man in red. In 2004 good old Nick brought the brothers a little Christmas Present on behalf of the 'Big Lottery Fund':
