there's a reason i mentioned 'sufi' in inverted commas and mentioned the words post-modern (or pre-modern halwa-peer-cult). they are more misguided than the wahabis, and spreading like a cancer

this will irk them no end...lol

this 'salafi common man' will have to be utterly clueless about salafism to be considered better than anybody and in this internet age I doubt there are many of them.

isn't this 'mipster' culture a natural by-product of salafism's hollowness? they are all about rituals and symbols but have no depth in their actions.

Most importantly their sacrilegious claims that:

    1. everyone can do ijtihad and derive rulings from the Quran and hadith.
    2. past scholars were humans like us and were as prone to mistakes, prejudices and opportunism as anyone else so we are under no obligations whatsoever to follow their rulings.

has directly supplied 'mipsterz' and modernists alike with intellectual fodder to upholster the claim that their actions are in complete harmony with the shariah. these arguments are the cornerstone of the rhetoric of such groups. kudos to pseudo-salafis!

groups have emerged and will continue to emerge, saying:

"alright, we wear the symbols and perform the rituals - and we can prove that our actions are supported by 'the Quran and the hadith' based on our broad-minded and progressive readings of them (not of the shallow minded, women hating 'mullahs' of the past). No one has monopoly over the Quran - it is a message from God to all his creatures and each one can understand it. Islam is not an intellectual property of the Arabs or the Asians so please stop brow-beating us into conforming to your degressive interpretations of it's laws. Islam has a living and breathing sharaih that allows for changes in rule-book with times and circumstances. this is called tajdid."

    as for the sufified-salafis:

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 6.578 Narrated byAbu Said Al Khudri
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "There will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon yours, and whose fasting will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur'an which will not go past their throats (they will not act on it) and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and look at the unfeathered arrow but see nothing, and look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.808 Narrated byAli
I relate the traditions of Allah's Apostle to you for I would rather fall from the sky than attribute something to him falsely. But when I tell you a thing which is between you and me, then no doubt, war is guile. I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "In the last days of this world there will appear some young foolish people who will use (in their claim) the best speech of all people (i.e. the Qur'an) and they will abandon Islam as an arrow going through the game. Their belief will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have practically no belief), so wherever you meet them, kill them, for he who kills them shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection."

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 6.577 Narrated byAli
I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game, their faith will not exceed their throats. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."

i remember when we were kids, and our parents were young(er), there were either properly purdah-observing women or simply non-observing ones who acknowledged the weakness of their own nafs and had the intention to do it after performing the hajj or to do it sometime in the future, when their faith, knowledge and practice got stronger or so on.

looking back i respect the honesty and integrity of those non-hijabi ladies who acknowledged the weakness of their nafs and didn't fool themselves or others with this 'non-practicing practice' of the hijab. i'm not justifying or praising the sin, just praising their being honest to themselves

somewhere down the line, the non-practicing desi ladies had this for an idiotic justification and rationalization of their non-practice of the hijab, something along the lines of - 'our hearts and intentions are pure and modest and Allah knows them'

this whole middle ground "mipster" thing between full on purdah-observant and non-observant is a new phenomenon and really is the new in-thing in non-practice of hijab

if they did it of their own volition, young teenagers or college-going girls could be afforded some husn az-zdhann and one could try to think well of them that perhaps it's a transition stage between non-practicing, moving forward towards full-practicing

the PROBLEM is that there are "sufis" and "shuyukh" promoting this and even classifying it as the final and perfect step in the practice of hijab - and that is a HUGE problem. notwithstanding the fact that in our times middle-aged aunties too have embraced it and are promoting it to their daughters, in many cases due to the full blessings of the "shuyukh"

isn't one of them "sufi" run by hisham kabbani & co.?

the post-modern "tasawwuf" is all about pretense and bling

i don't want to be taken out of context or misunderstood, and risk getting flamed, but honestly, at the common man level, salafi is the new sufi

at the "scholarly" level, their elders are rotten scoundrels, but i prefer the salafi common man over the post-modern (or the pre-modern halwa-peer-cult) 'sufi' common man any day

it is the neo western culture that ISNA/ICNA (ikhwani/jamate islami of North America) are trying to create. It started with the secular tunisians/ algerians, french speakers, alawites and Lebanese Christians influencing the Sunni Lebanese and syrian women in the west. Then it caught up on to Egyptians, moroccons, and now finally to Indians and Pakistani women. Most hijabis raised in North America are now converting to the non-halal dress code of a hjab on the head, and tight jeans on the bottom. Hijab is not a religious symbol, but a fashion item. And men raised in the West, encourage it.

It is slowing penetrating the Turkish Hijabis and Indonesian and Somali Hijabis, who havn't really converted in mass yet. It is just the pure salafis who are not into it and keeping modesty. ISNA/ICNA allows people to eat haram meat in North America, all in the name of Modernity, and fiqh of minorities.
