it is also very common in pakistan, india, and bangladesh that people usually shorten Abdulrahman or Abdullah as Abdul just like Shahul.
i have many keralite friends and yes, Shahul Hameed is a very popular name amongst them. it could arguably be considered *the most* common keralite muslim name after Muhammad.
as far as i know - a great qadri saint in nagore, in south india is called as sayyid shahul hamid qadri among other titles. this, i suppose, is similar to muhiyuddin, a title of sayyiduna ghaws al-a'azam. and muhiyuddin* is a common name in muslim countries - including arab countries, similarly, i assume shahul hameed is common in the south; particularly, kerala and tamil nadu. ---- someone knowledgeable from kerala/tamilnadu may correct me if i am mistaken. ---- shahul hameed appears to be shah al-hameed as noori bhai has rightly observed. wAllahu ta'ala a'alam. *the title muHiyuddin also refers to many other ulama including imam nawawi and shaykh al-akbar.
the original post is here post # 13 this name 'Shahul Hameed' seems very common among Keralite Muslim brothers, and usually they call the person only with Shahul. what does shahul mean? i think it is actually Shah Al-Hameed, Shahul itself is not a name, am i right?
