During the bill discussions, BJP parliamentarians brazenly lied about the waqf administration and made unfounded claims of waqf board's encroachment attempts. the same thing is now being said about the windsor manor hotel in bangalore on 500 crore property paying 12,500 rupees per month. they are saying: waqf is claiming properties of five star hotels! whereas this was decided by high court of ktaka 12 yrs ago. btw the aforementioned hotel is on shia waqf.
This is a very old news. It was flagged to me few months ago when one andhbhakt from my university days flashed this to claim that even Ambanis were not safe from Waqf's encroachment (when it was the other way around)! Anyway the primary reason for latest amendments is not capitalistic/commercial, it is purely a means to socially humiliate, disempower and economically deprive the Muslims. Just like UCC, CAA/NRC, Triple Talaq etc. bills are. It's part of the process to make Muslims 3rd class citizens. Govt (and friends of the state machinery) has been usurping the Waqf properties for several decades (mostly in connivance with corrupt waqf officials, as aH noted); they didn't need the latest amendment to facilitate it. Most of the waqf land/properties have been idling for too long, thanks to incompetence and laws/authorities that hindered utilisation/development. The real targets now are mosques/madaris, qabristan etc. which are in active use. That waqf amendment may benefit their crony capitalist friends is just a bonus or secondary upside. These powerful friends have many other avenues of acquiring free/cheap land (waqf or otherwise); such land grab has been on for several decades (and doesn't need repeating here). Waqf land parcels are too small and insignificant to feed their appetite.

These distractions are well planned. Next to come will be Uniform Civil Code (UCC), finally culminating in official Hindu Rashtra declaration. On surface, these might appear to be desperate attempts by BJP to remain relevant. But make no mistake - this is what their hindutva constituency cares about; so they will be delivered one electoral success after other (by 'religion' hook or 'EVM' crook). In fact to their loyal andh-bhakt base, economy/jobs etc. are pure distractions. jab vish ka manthan hoga, to amrit (kaal) niklega! when poison will be churned, out will emerge the (era of) nectar India will well and truly be the Vish-guru (leader of those with venom), even though having failed the aspirations for being Vishwa-guru (world leader) --- There will be very little to snatch from Muslims anymore, but that disempowerment and subjugation will be near complete and permanent. Wonder what would India without Muslims look like. I haven't read Saeed Naqvi's fanciful, tragicomic, Hitchcockian allusion "Muslim Vanishes", where he tries to imagine the India when Muslims vanish overnight. Needless to say for right-wing nutters, it will be ultimate nirvana - all social ills like backwardness, crime, over-population etc. would be magically solved overnight. But what would the daily life be like for those hankering for this Utopia? How dull, listless and paralysed would the life be when racist conversations, dog-whistles, othering etc. would be made redundant. No mental intrusion. How will they cope in the aftermath?
i can relate to your cynicism. but it is all not rosy for hindutva/hindus either. recession, inflation, mass unemployment, breakdown of civil services, rampant corruption, dadagiri of ruling class has jumped considerably. and the taxes regime is sparing no one. waqf bill may be designed to hurt muslims in the long run, but as of now the country is heading towards more chaos. the hindutva power hold has loosened considerably. in the south, two years of non-bjp govt has given us a breather, especially in ktaka and andhra (TN and kerala were always green). hindutva goons are a bit subdued and there is a semblance of law and order. muslim baiting and persecution is only to distract; south is seriously angry with hindi imposition, delimitation and refusal of center to pay dues.
Season for hot air and shola bayaani (now that summer has set in), but no action by our leaders (just like damp squib of the monsoon that follows). Like CAA/NRC, this too will pass. I'm not advocating any protest or mass agitation against waqf bill. That's a sure recipe for more loss of Muslim lives and properties (through bulldozer demolitions). We can't afford to fight for the losing cause. --- As I have voiced on previous occasions, (given the ground realities) I'm not optimistic unlike brothers aH and AQ. In more immediate term, waqf bill will be challenged in Supreme court. It's forgone conclusion that the court will either sit indefinitely on it (as it has on CAA/NRC) or will quash it on spurious grounds (Babri masjid style justice). Next what? No, don't expect the "sympathetic" political parties to protest on behalf of Muslims. Next will come a slew of attempts by state machinery (abetted by hindutva organisations) to forcibly take control of historic/recent mosques and qabristan. I prognosticate that all these attempts will be successfully upheld by the court (since that is what the waqf bill amendment enables). Now that qabristans will be gone, Muslims will have to head for proverbial Pakistan! Remember the slogan - "musulmanon ke do hi sthaan, Pakistan ya qabristan" (Muslims have only two destinations - Pakistan or graveyard). The best case scenarios for the Indian Muslims are the following: 1. BJP somehow loses power at the centre in future elections. May be "sympathetic" parties in power will repeal the waqf bill. But by that time, enough damage will have been done. 2. Other minorities will be next to face the music (now that Muslims have been "done and dusted"). Sikhs will not give up without fight and christians will have western powers to put pressure. May be Muslims will somehow benefit from being in other minorities' coat-tails. --- Until now, Catholic church in Kerala was busy supporting waqf bill (especially with an eye to wrest back Munambam estate through enroachment by christians) But now the same knife is being twisted into their back. like the caa, farm laws, this will also suffer a blow. in sha'Allah. congress has played a mastercard on this one - and muslim vote has now consolidated behind them. if they do not do the maharastra trick (by adding 7 million new voters), bihar and UP can be won by the allies (SP-RJD-congress) tejaswi son of lalu has also announced that if their party comes to power, they will not implement waqfbill. akhilesh in UP has also supported muslims unequivocally. even bjp leaders are squirming at the prospect of civil unrest - increasingly the regime is painting itself in a corner. the regime is only modi and amit shah. and both are propped by adani. both have abandoned the country - for adani - as trump levies tariffs and humiliates indians, modi keeps mum because his master adani is listed in US courts. so trump is using it as leverage. south is already simmering on the issue of delimitation and the stubborn refusal of the center to give them their share of taxes. bangladesh has invited china, and china will waste no time in setting up a naval base at chittagong. china has already wooed bhutan and nepal whom india has miffed (i.e. modi admin). pakistan is not a friend. trump, it seems, speaks to modi on how to lose friends and offend people. the most important thing is the middle class and so-called "upper-caste" hindu (al-kufru millatu'n wahidah, all of them are same for us) is getting hurt in many ways, as it finally begins to hit their bottom-line. so yes, there is extreme discontent in the cowshed. but hindutva/sanghi/modi-govt is one-trick pony. they think that somehow this will buy them time and distraction. data shows that things are worsening - especially with trump throwing a spanner - the cowshed will come under fire. and yes, manipur. ---- one spark anywhere, and the "union" will collapse under its own weight.
