“O my Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer)! Bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous; grant me honorable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations); make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss.” (26:83-84)

    (God) Most Gracious!
It is He Who has taught the Qur'an.
    He has created man:
He has taught him speech (and intelligence).
    The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;
And the herbs and the trees - both (alike) bow in adoration.
And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice),
In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.
So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.
It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures:
    Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates);
Also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-smelling plants.
Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

    Pray [O Prophet, that]
I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,
    the King of mankind,
    the God of mankind
From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,
Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind,
Of the jinn and of mankind.

this verse shows how special the heart of the prophet sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam is. a mountain, a symbol of power, would have been destroyed had the Qur'an been sent on it, but rasulAllah sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam had 6000+ verses revealed unto him.

so, from such examples, we realise [those who have understanding] that:

a diamond is a stone but a stone like no other
muHammad is a man but a man like no other

    alaHazrat says:

Allah ki sar taa ba qadam shaan haiN yeh
in sa nahiN insaan woh insaan haiN yeh [see the beauty of this line here]
Qur'an toh imaan bataata hai unheN
imaan yeh kahta hai meri jaan haiN yeh

the following verse has been ringing in my head today so i thought i'd share it with you:

la yastawi aSHab un-nari wa aSHab ul-Jannah. aSHab ul-Jannati hum ul-fa'izun.

law anzalna hadha al-Qur'ana `ala jabalin la ra'aytahu khashi`an mutaSaddian min khashyatillah. wa tilka al-amthalu naDribuha lin-nasi la`allahum yatafakkarun.

Not equal are the Companions of the Fire and the Companions of the Garden: the Companions of the Garden, they are the victorious.

Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily, you (O Muhammad) would have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah; and We set forth these parables to men that they may reflect.

i particularly like the last verse of surah tawbah

laqad ja-akum Rasulun../verily a Messenger has come to you from amongst your own selves; it pains him that you suffer, is eager and anxious of your well-being and merciful, kind for the believers [tawbah, 8:128]

it just warms the cockles of my heart when i recite it.

i am not a great fan of top10/top100 lists; there is one such list for everything on the planet and almost every one of them is flawed.

they simply don't work. and i don't think we must bring that culture of 'my best verse', 'my best hadith' since it serves no purpose. because we are restricting ourselves for no reason.

having said that, it is true that i do read and re-read often, a few verses from the qur'an al-karim more than others. it is not the same as saying 'favorite verse', but i am more familiar with these.

as the Prophet of Allah `azza wa jall, sallallahu`alayhi wa sallam said: 'the best of deeds are the perpetual ones, even if they are meager'

    imam ghazali's book 'jawahiru'l qur'an' /gems from the qur'an is worth mention.

our teacher preferred that anybody who could, should memorize the surah al-hujurat [hint: because of the adab we must follow in the presence of Rasul sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam and admonition therein to abstain from backbiting and mocking others and the egalitarian declarations]

    ------------------------
    1. qul lan yuSibana illa ma katabAllahu lana / 'Say ye: no harm shall befall us except that which Allah has destined for us' [tawbah, 9:51]

    -----------------------------
    2. wa man yattaqillaha yaj'al lahu makhraja / 'and whosoever fears Allah, He shall deliver him [from his misery, affliction or doubt] [talaq, 65:2]

    -----------------------------
    3. and give him sustenance from whence he does not even imagine; whosoever has faith in Allah, Allah is sufficient for him; Allah ta'ala shall make His works to reach [their ends]; verily Allah has ordained a measure for everything. [talaq, 65:3]

    -----------------------------
    4. la taqnatu min raHmatillah / 'Say ye: O my slaves who have transgressed their souls, despair not from the Mercy of Allah; Allah shall forgive all sins, verily He is Forgiving, Merciful. [zumar, 39:53]

    -----------------------------
    5. wa law annahum idh dhalamu anfusahum / 'and if they oppress their own souls, let them come to you and seek pardon of Allah; and the Messenger seek pardon for them; they will find that Allah forgiving and Merciful. [an-nisa, v.64]

    -----------------------------
    6. fa la raada li faDlih / If Allah taala makes calamity to touch you, there is none who can release you from it, except He; and if He Wills good for you, there is none who can stop His Grace [from reaching you]. [yunus, 107]

    -----------------------------
    7. a laysa Allahu bi kafin `abdah / is Allah not sufficient for His slave? [zumar, v.36]

    bala ya rabb.

    -----------------------------
    8. fa inni qarib / and when My slaves ask thee about Me, verily I am Close! i accept the supplicant's prayer when He beseeches me. [al-baqarah, v.186]

    -----------------------------
    9. aw tasma'au lahum rikzaa? / And how many have We annihilated in centuries past; do you sense anyone among them, or [even] hear a [whisper of] their pleas?’ [maryam,v.98]

    -----------------------------
    10. last verse of surah tawbah

laqad ja-akum Rasulun../verily a Messenger has come to you from amongst your own selves; it pains him that you suffer, is eager and anxious of your well-being and merciful, kind for the believers [tawbah, 8:128]

    alaHazrat says:
    mu'min huN mu'minoN pey ra'uf o raHim ho
sayil huN sayiloN ko khushi la nahar ki hai

    i am believer, a mumin and you are merciful and kind to believers;
i ask, and there is good news for the mendicant that he will not be turned away.

the first verse refers to the quranic verse above [8:128] and the second to the verse of surah ad-Duha: "And do not chide the beggar [ad-Duha, v.10]".

    -----------------------------
    11. inna a'aTaynaka al-kawthar / 'verily we have given you the kawthar' [surah al-kawthar, v.1]

    ------------------------------
    12. alhakumu't takathur / 'the greed of hoarding [wealth and worldly things] has made you to forgetful [of death]; until you came to [your] graves.' [surah takathur]

    ------------------------------
    13. wa `ibadu'r RaHman al-ladhina yamshuna `ala'l arDi hawna / 'the slaves of RaHman are those who walk humbly upon the earth; and when the ignorant address them, they reply 'peace'. [al-furqan, 25:63]

    ------------------------------
    14. innaka lan takhriqa'l arDa wa lan tablugha'l jibala Tula / Walk not with pride; verily, you will not shatter the earth nor reach up to the height of mountains [with your haughtiness] [isra,17:37]

    -----------------------------
    15. la yus'al amma yaf'al wa hum yus'alun /nobody can ask Him [Allah] what He does; but they will be asked [by Him]. [anbiya v.23]

    -----------------------------
    16. hal ata `ala'l insani heenu'n mina'd dahri lam yakun shay'yan madhkura / has it come to pass on the human, a time when he was non-existent [and nothing that could be mentioned?] [al-insan,v.1]

    -----------------------------
    17. la in shakartum la azidannakum / if ye are thankful, I shall increase [My bounties and gifts upon you] [ibrahim,v.7]

    -----------------------------
    18. fa Sabrun jamil / patience is beautiful [yusuf, v.18]

    -----------------------------
    19. irji`yi ila rabbiki raDiyatan marDiyyah / O the content soul - return towards your Lord, a pleased and pleasing [its Lord] soul. [fajr, v.28]

and for the moment, the last one:

    20. wa la sawfa yu'Tika rabbuka fatarDa / And Lord shall give you [so much] that you shall be pleased. [duHa, v.5]

it is the last two verses, which alaHazrat translated in his verse:
khuda ki raza chahtey haiN do `aalam
khuda chaahta hai raza e MuHammad

the two worlds seek to please Allah taala
Allah ta'ala wishes the pleasure of Muhammad
    [sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam]

thanks to aqdas for pointing out a couple of mistakes. it was late in the night and i posted the first draft without review. the only times i 'referred' a source was when i looked up the verse numbers on search. there might be other mistakes too; i will go through them today, inshaAllah.

Just thought I'd ask you for your fave verse/s or surah?
Mine is Surah Duh.a and the verse, "Wa la sawfa yu'tika Rabbuka fa tard.a"
-In Ala Hazrat's translation, "Aur, (ay Mahboob) hum tum ko itna ataa kardenge ke aap razi ho jaayenge" (from memory so might not be exactly correct): And (O Beloved) We shall give you so much that you shall be pleased.

In the tafsirs of Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan and of Sayyid Naimuddin Muradabadi they both quote the saying of Imam Ja'afar Saadiq :as: that, We people of the Ahlul Bayt, consider this verse the most hopeful because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that I will not be pleased whilst even a single member of my Ummah remains in Hell!

    Allahu Akbar!
Well, this is my fave verse and the reason why.
