the rest of the event was a loss leader!
the REAL reason a lot of youth go to these kind of events is the all famous matrimonial service. this is big business for any number of right or wrong reasons.and alhamdulillah that's great. people only take from it what they go for - both in terms of their own worldly acquisitions as well as from a spiritual perspective of rewards or punishments. there's an ayah/hadith too about someone doing hijrah along with the Muhajiroon but with the intention of marrying someone.
- all meaning that in reality a lot of people might not be led astray as you and i might think. they might be just sitting through the rest of the convention all tuned out and dreaming of something else, like how most people sit through a boring physics class in college! who really understands vector mechanics when they walk out of the lecture hall? and that's a very decent and straight forward subject, heck fuzzy logic makes more sense than the ramblings of ali jifry or hosein nasr or mark hanson!!!!!

I am not so optimistic. One misleading takeaway message is no less significant than a truckload of them. It leaves traces which gradually develop into substantial blindfolds that envelop the heart. The hadith which I have quoted numerous times on the forum:
"In the ĥadīth of Muslim, narrated by Ĥudhayfah rađiyAllāhu ánhū:
I have heard the Messenger of Allāh şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam say: ‘Heresies will be presented to [people’s] hearts slowly and repeatedly; and in that heart which accepts it, a dark mark is made; and in the heart which rejects it, a white mark. So much so that, hearts will be of two
kinds: the white, like marble - no heresy or evil can harm it, as long as the heavens and earth abide. [The second kind] black: like the tipped over and dirty water jug - [which] neither recognizes the righteous, nor rejects the evil; except, that fancied by its own desire.
Qāđī Íyāđ explaining the above says that, ‘presented’ means, mischief will stick to hearts and leave its trace, like the marks imprinted on the sides of a person who has lain upon a mat, and because of pressing close to the mat. This will occur repeatedly until it takes firm hold[in hearts]. Or it means: like reeds that are woven one after the other in a mat, so also will heresies take root in hearts, one after another. The white [heart] like marble, to which dirt does not stick; and dark [heart] like the soiled water jug, tipped over and nothing remains in it [from goodness]."

This passage well describes the trend prevalent among sheeples of every conceivable persuasion:
From little to large events, we experience or behold this every day. It is a history and all read it. It belongs to human nature and to society: and until some process shall be discovered by which men shall be compelled to think by rule and under regulation, as in a penitentiary their bodies are required to work, we despair of having much improvement in the general condition of human affairs. The ignorant and uneducated
man is quite too willing to depute to others the task of thinking for him and furnishing his opinions. The great mass are gregarious, and whether a lion or a log is chosen for their guidance, it is still the same—they will follow the leader, if regularly recognized as such,
even though he be an ass. As if conscious of their own incapacities, whether these arise from deficiencies of education or denials of birth, they forego the only habit—that of self-examination—which alone can supply the deficiency; and with a blind determination, are willing, on any terms, to divest themselves of the difficulties and responsibilities of their own government. They crown others with all command, and
binding their hands with cords, place themselves at the disposal of those, who, in many cases, not satisfied with thus much, must have them hookwinked also. To this they also consent, taking care, in their great desire to be slaves, to be foremost themselves in tying on the bandage which keeps them in darkness and in chains for ever. Thus will they be content to live, however wronged, if not absolutely bruised and beaten; happy to escape from the cares of an independent mastery of their own conduct, if, in this way, they can also escape from the noble responsibilities of independence.(source)

it's the rigorously well known hadith about niyyah, that Mujtahid Imams have called a third of all knowledge or a third of Islam itself, and have mentioned it in the beginning of their treatises and books:

in the commentary it says about a Sahabi who migrated to marry a lady Sahabiyyah called Umm Qays, and he came to be known as Muhajir Umm Qays

it seems Suhaib Webb is not a man of principle. i thought he stood up for what he believed in, and practiced that. He should have spoken against Hossein Nasr, but it seems he has fallen too.

Perhaps you haven't read his posts on that Shia website "YaN...com", else you might not have reached that conclusion! He goes as the "mufakkir" of that website, and most likely in the next 15 - 20 years he will be promoted to the next PAQ of his time. And then perhaps you will see Abu Hasan's son continuing on the footsteps of his dad going through the pains of refuting his tafzilli/heretic beliefs
i think Wadood was trying to say that nawazuddin is 10 times more knowledgeable than ninowy in the methodology & trickery of khomeini
