an old friend mentioned PAQS in a mail more than 25 years ago - and described him as a "computer" for his (supposed) extensive knowledge of islamic sciences and also secular sciences. i did not have any direct access - but only the praise of an admirer - i left it at husn zann. maybe he is.
some years later, youtube became a thing. and clips of people like tahir and PAQS began to appear. some of us are quite old to remember that video sharing in those days was thru rm and wmv files (real-media and windows-media video).
in fact, i remember that my first "experience" of tahirul padre was a wmv file i received in mail. about 6-7 minutes (if i remember well) - and i picked out a couple of blatant lies, and a few other errors - not counting the mispronounced arabic/urdu words.
unfortunately, i don't have them in my mail as the usa.com mail service closed down - and at that time we didn't think of retaining mails for archival purposes.

so youtube gave us first-hand access to hyped speakers like PAQS.
my first impression of the person was: he was articulate and appeared intelligent. and i was surprised to see a speaker from the subcontinent mentioning books and names. but he was afflicted with this malady of false premises, erroneous conclusions, misquotes and blatant distortions - and all said with panache. an unsuspecting onlooker could not remain unimpressed, and the supreme confidence with which he pulled out quotes could seal the deal.
being a student of islamic sciences with a habit of looking up sources, i felt that something was amiss - but i didn't pay much attention until people began to post his clips (youtube links) on our forum. the first thing i remember picking upon him was a sheyr - apparently said with a mistimed pause.

then came the clarifications, and i apologised. but i was still guarded, as i note in a post that:

and then, his clips began to trickle in; very soon, we realised that he had shiah leanings and we were soon convinced that he was a closet rafidi. i would criticise him, even though he was very popular at that time and it was not easy to criticise him, due to his legion of followers and admirers who trained their guns on me and our forum. in one such incident, tahir riaz had attacked imam bukhari (a shia trait) following his master - pir abdul qadir shah - and i refuted him using an analogy.

i was cautious and had not termed him a shiyi or a closet rafidi, yet.perhaps, this is not the right time to bring up this issue, but shah sahib's routine mistakes in citation and derivations would make anything he writes suspicious - from maqalat of ash'ari to the ruwwat of bukhari and other issues. i would not take anything shah sahib says unless i verify it myself.
