Assalamu alaikum
Thank you for adding me to the forum. I have been reading here and there for some time on this forum and have found it very beneficial, especially the aqidah translation of Aqidah al Awam. I found it very beneficial.

I wanted to ask what the sunni scholars have mentioned regarding the 12 Imams of Ahl al Bayt. Are there any biographies written which are trustworthy?

I was looking of how to search the forum before posting the question, but i couldnt find the search bar?

If someone could assist with the above question, i would highly appreciate it.

Jazak Allahu khayran

Alahazrat writes in FR:

'This is a hadith, and it is necessary to begin the counting from Ṣiddīq al-Akbar (Abū Bakr), may Allah Most High be pleased with him, because in one narration of this very hadith it is stated:

“After me there will be twelve caliphs. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq will remain only for a short time.”
What is meant by these caliphs are those who will be leaders of the Ummah and who will rule according to justice and the Shariah. It is not necessary that they be consecutive or continuous, nor does the hadith contain any wording that indicates such continuity.

Among them are known to be: the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs, Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba, Amir Mu‘āwiyah, ‘Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, and ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz. And at the end of time will be Sayyiduna Imam Mahdi, may Allah Most High be pleased with them all.

These make nine; regarding the determination of the remaining three, there is no certainty.

And Allah Most High knows best.'

Thank you for the swift response.

Is it agreed upon whom the 12 Imams are according to sunnis?

Alahazrat writes about the 12 imams of Ahl al-Bayt (and the questioner mentions 12 imams):

'If Imamate is taken in the sense of being a religious exemplar and authority to be followed, then without doubt their servants and the servants of their servants are religious exemplars. And if what is intended by the technical meaning is the stations of sainthood (wilāyah)—that every Ghawth has two ministers, ‘Abd al-Malik and ‘Abd al-Rabb, who are called the two Imams—then without doubt all of these noble persons [are included].'

Further down, Alahazrat writes:

'Up to Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq, may Allah Most High be pleased with him, all these noble persons were undoubtedly mujtahids and Imams among the mujtahids, and the remaining noble persons were most likely also mujtahids.

And Allah Most High knows best.'

That doesnt answer my question brother. I was asking if the 12 Imams are mentioned by name?

Are the Imam's of Ahl al Bayt different then the ones you mentioned above?

Obviously Sayyidina Abu Bakr Siddiq radiallahu anhu, then Sayyidina Umar al Farooq radiallahu anhu then all the khalifahs until hazrat umar ibn abdul aziz radiallahu anhu.

I want to specifically know about

Hazrat Imam Zain al Abideen
Hazrat Imam Muhammad al Baqir until Imam Hasan al Askari radiallahu anhum.

Are these Imams mentioned in sunni books?
