From Fatawa Ridawiyyah, vol.13, p.361
Question: What do the scholars say about Zayd whose paternal grandfather was Pathan and his mother and paternal grandmother were both Sayyidah? Is Zayd a Sayyid or Pathan? Bayyinu Tujaru.
Answer: The Shari’ah ordains that the lineage is from the father. He whose father and paternal grandfather are Pathan or Mughal or Shaykh, then he himself is from that clan even if his mother and maternal grandmother are Sayyidah’s. The dear Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:
Whoever claims his lineage through anyone apart from his own father; then there is a curse upon him from Allah, the angels and mankind. On the day of reckoning, Allah will neither accept his fard nor his nafl.
Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidi, Nasa’i and others has reported this hadith from Mawla ‘Ali karramAllahu ta’ala wajhahu. Yes, Allah has made it specific to Imam Hasan and Imam Husain and their siblings radiyAllahu ta’ala anhum ajma’in that they are the children of RasulAllah sallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam. Thereafter, their children then follow the same convention that their lineage is through their fathers. This is why the children of Sibtain Karimain are Sayyid whereas the lineage of the children of the daughters of Fatima radiyAllahu ta’ala anha are towards their fathers. Wallahu ta’ala a’lam.
