As-salamu `alaykum wa rahmat Allah

I've been told that using the term "Ya Muhammad" is bad adab and one should use "Ya Rasul Allah" or equivalent (Allah bless him and give him peace). Can anyone shed some light on this and with some evidence from the `ulama please if possible.

Are there any circumstances where it is permissible? Poetry maybe?

i don't think it's haram to say ya muhammad but the scholars say it is from adab to say ya rasulAllah instead. even in the qur'an, it is ya ayyuhan nabi etc. and nowhere is it ya muhammad.

it's not disrespectful to say ya muhammad per se unless it's with a bad intention.

the scholars say that even if it's ya muhammad in a narration, the teacher should say ya rasulAllah instead.
