i agree with azizq; i am not a big fan of professor sahib despite the benefit of a lot of his lectures (alas he has made some strange statements in a few places --see below) but we have to be fair. he is at a university convocation and there is nothing wrong with his dress. if u look carefully it even seems like he has a sherwani underneath the robe. we shouldnt let fanaticism get in the way of truth either for or against an individual.

there are other things he's done which ulama have criticised -- eg shaykh GFH criticised his book on the events of ghadir khum i believe as well as his idiosyncratic belief wherein he said that the khilafat of the prophet was split into worldly/temporal and spiritual and abu bakr :ra: is the head of the temporal but ali :ra: is head of the spiritual khilafat! just as there has been criticism of the tafdili crew by other ulema. this video though is not one of those things we can criticise.

secondly, don't judge people by their appearance: many wolves wear sheep's clothing in this day and age. if there is ONE lesson life has taught me it is that! he is a good orator though and his speeches are referenced --he has the books in front of him and his style is academic. as for the rest,

overall my personal view of him is still undecided though out of caution i hold my tongue. there are a lot of pluses and a few minuses--which knowledgeable people have pointed out. allah and his rasool know best.

(to be fair i think a lot of the problematic stuff is more to do with his mureeds who praise him to the sky and give him ridiculous titles like shaykh al islam, mujaddid e daur e rawaaN, man of the century etc.! that is not his fault and unlike others i have never heard or seen his boast about his knowledge.)

That dress originated in the Muslim world, where the students would tie the Qur'an to their heads. It was imitated by the West. Shaykh Afifi has something to say about that...
 
Do you not see that his hat is what the non Muslims wear, when they graduate.

Muslims wear the simple hat or the imamah. The point is that he is immitating the west rather than the sunnah.

I wasnt taking about the origins of the robe there is no harm in that.

Not what a Shaykh ul Islam would do they real Shaykh ul Islam wal Muslimeen Hazrat Khawaja Qamarud Deen Sialvi alaih rehmah was an example of a man following the sunnah tahir does not even have the sunnah beard.
 
It depends on what you define as Sunnah. In the Shafi'i and Maliki Madhhahib that beard is fine.

And it is fine to wear what he is wearing. It is Mubah, doing it and not doing it is equal though it is rewarded if done with good intentions...
