Al-Salam 'alaikum Sadati,

Does anyone have any Sunni literature (articles, books, essays, et al.) in English about Nadwat al-'Ulama and Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan? There is alot of information on Deobandis but I havent found much about the aforementioned.

The end result of A'ala Hazrat's opposition.

1] Some of the true scholars of Din who had supported Nadwa initially as Muhaddis Wasi Ahmed Surati an-Naqshbandi(Ra)[disciple of Shaykh FazluRhman Ganj Moradabadi(qs)], and Shaykh Abdul Qadir Badayuni(rah) distanced away from it.
2] Shi'is and followers of Sir Sayyed Ahmed Khan were expelled from its memberships.[Personnel letter was written by A'la Hazrat to the founder of Nadwa Mawlana Muhammad Ali Monghyri, a sunni naqshbandi scholar to exclude them as well as Ahlul Hadith]
3] Significant loss of its influence among the the Muslim masses.
But the Nadwa continued to harbor the 'bad mazhabis', considering Ahle Hadith as a5th mazhab and therefore became a breeding ground for producing Islmaic rationalists, pro-Deobandis and pro-Najdians who loved Ibn Taymiyyah above all other scholars.It ignored the advice of A'la Hazrat , quoting the Maktubat of Imam-i Rabbani Shaykh Ahmed Sirhindi(QS), to the effect that 'the harm done by a single mubtadi(heretic) is greater than that done by 100 kafirs'.

About this late the rector of Nadwatul Ulema, Shaykh Huseyn Hilmi Isik(d.1422.Istanbul) had written:
[FONT=Verdana,Helvetica,Arial]Abu 'l-Hasan 'Ali Nadwi, the director of Nadwat al-ulama' [founded in Lucknow, India in 1310 (1891)], praises al-Imam ar-Rabbani Ahmad as-Sirhindi and his services in his book Ad-da'wat al-Islamiyya [Lucknow, 1395 (1975)], but adds his praises for Ismail Dahlawi (killed in 1246), Nadhir Husain Dahlawi (d. 1320), the madrasa in Diobend which was founded by Muhammad Qasim Nanawtawi [d. 1317 (1899)], one of the Khulafa' of Imdad-ullah, in 1288 (1871), Ashraf Ali Tahanawi (d. 1362), the Tabligh group and its founder, Muhammad Ilyas. This faqir, the author, has read the book Taqwim al-bayan, Persian translation of Ismail Dahlawi's Taqwiyat al-iman [Pakistan, 1396 (1976)] and come to the conclusion that Ismail is not only a sheer ignoramus but also a non-madhhabi idiot who strives to censure the right by alloying it with the wrong. Sir Sayyed AhmedKhan and Mirza Gulam Ahmad

Sir Sayyed Ahmad Khan was a contemporary of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed Qadiyani(La’natullahi), the false prophet and at least two of the latter's most trusted disciples, AbdulKareem Siyalkoti and Hakeem Noorudhin followed Sir Syed's rational theology.
Sir Sayed published an exegesis of the Holy Quran around 1880, in which he provides a narration of the of imaginary the crucifixion of Jesus and its aftermath though against Islamic traditions. This narration formed the basis of ‘Qadiyani’s divine knowledge' about the death(?) of Jesus, in contradiction to Qur’an itself almost a decade later, and portions of Sir Sayed's book are copied into a book written by Mirza in the late 1890s.

He wrote in his book [Al-Balaagh] that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan seconded him in three matters:
  1. About the [imaginary] death of Hazrat Isa(AS)
  2. We are more obliged to the British Government than to the Ottoman Sultan.
  3. [FONT=&quot]To write a rebuttal to the book "Ummahaat al-Mu'minin" by a converted Christian.[/FONT]
 
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan_The Sources of his ideas.

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan’s parable was like that of a Man who cut his feet in order to closely fit them into the shoes. He was a man of new religious philosophy antagonistic to Islam and called it ‘Naturalist’, in the sense of rejecting anything that goes against his definition of Human Nature.
He was a pro-Christian Oriental scholar who showed loyalty to the British Empire, and so was knighted in 1888.
His main inspirations were Christian reformers, as
1] Martin Luther (10 November 1483 – 18 February 1546) was the German priest and professor of Christian theology who initiated the Protestant reformism.
2] Richard Steele and Joseph Addison,
The publishers of ‘The Spectator’ single sheet daily newspapers published in England in 1711.Also of , Tatler (also, informally, The Tatler) a British journal started in 1709.
The aim of ‘The Spectator’ newspaper was said to be “to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality…to bring philosophy out of the closets and libraries, schools and colleges, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and coffeehouses”.
“It recommended that its readers "consider it part of the tea-equipage" and not leave the house without reading it in the morning. One of its functions was to provide readers with educated, topical talking points, and advice in how to carry on conversations and social interactions in a polite manner. In keeping with the values of Enlightenment philosophies of their time”
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started his Journal in Urdu named ‘Tahzib-al-Akhlaq’ .

It was on the same lines as of ‘The Spectator’ to guide its readers on the ‘simplicity of faith’, the common slogan of all reformers.
Among other works, He had penned a commentary on the Bible in which he argued that Islam was the closest religion to the current Christianity
Sir Syed divided Sunni Muslims of India into two
1] Wahhabis. They are like Jewish scholars , hard-hearted. Highly prejudiced with no room for inner goodness.
2] Innovators (Bid’atis), meaning Ahlu Sunnah who in his opinion were like Roman Catholics who had some core of internal goodness and is punctilious in observing the customs of its forefathers but ‘accustomed to innovations’ (?)
Sir Syed wrote:
“Both these stand in our way, because we want to eradicate both Judaism and Roman Catholicism as concerned to Muslims and need ‘True and Unmixed Islam’ to achieve what are good.

 
Shibli Noamani_From Sir Syed to Nadwatul Ulama

Shibli Noamani was the Rector of Darul Ulum Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow from 1905 to 1913.He was basically a lawyer who could not succeed in his carrier and so joined as the professor of Persian language in 1883 in M.A.O College ,Alighar of Sir Syed and worked with Sir Syed till the later's death in 1898.His other close friend was Thomas.W.Arnold, the prof.of Philosophy.He was given the title of Shamsul Ulema by the rulers. During his tenure in Nadwa he had invited the infamous Egyptian Islamic rationalist Rashid Rida as well as Ismai'ili Aga Khan as chief guests for the anniversary.He had many works , notably in Kalam, the aim of them being refutation of Ahlu Sunna
( Ash'arite Kalam). In faith , though he did not follow Sir Syed's un-islamic views, He had tried to demolish Islam from within, propagating Mu'tazila views.
Syed Sulaiman Nadwi was his student in Nadwa.
