iqbal met thomas arnold and affected.he adviced iqbal to take lesson from philosophers.iqbal got phılosophy lessons.
He made speeches full of reformist opinions.he mentioned abduh and afgani in his works.
His opinions were not accepted by the sunni scholars.

  3. Btw there is an excellent series on Iqbal alayhirahmah and his thought, over 40 episodes, in a mixture of Urdu and English by Syed Zaid Hamid, called Iqbal ka Pakistan. I've watched the first 16 episodes so far and been v impressed by it. It is all available on YouTube. Just search for ' Iqbal ka Pakistan episode x'.

  4. I would not trust the wiki article. One glaring mistake is that Iqbal did not believe in mujaddidiyat!! On the contrary one of his heroes and exemplars for his concept of the ideal Muslim is Hazrat Mujaddid e Alf al Thani Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi Naqshbandi alayhirahmah.

    Kandhelvi was a deobandits.

  5. The thing to remember about Iqbal is that his ideas underwent many changes throughout his life. At one point he was heavily influenced by Orientalist thought but by the end he was a hardcore Sunni and many Sunni ulama say he was a wali. (that is the reason that a lot of modernists like his earlier poetry but dismiss his latter works as Islamic fascism!!)

It does certainly seem like it. If you have Iqbal's Reconstruction of religious though in Islam, then i'd say have a look at the last paragraph of chapter 5. It's a discussion of how the concept of the Messiah is a Magian one, and has no basis in Islam. He cocncludes that Ibn Khaldun's criticisms of the idea has demolished the alleged revelational basis in Islam of an similar idea, which had reappeared in Islam under Magian influence.

You can read it yourself at http://www.allamaiqbal.com/works/prose/english/reconstruction/index.htm

Click on 'The Spirit of Muslim Culture' on the left hand side and scroll down for the last paragraph.

    Salam Alaikum

I just happened to glance wikipedia saying Allama Iqbal rejected the belief in Imam Mehdi.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahdi

    1) Is what is claimed against Iqbal true?

    2) I have glanced over a few articles in the past claiming that Ala Hazrat too passed a fatwa of deviancy/kufr on Iqbal/some of his ash3ar (could be deobandi accusations too). Never bothered to investigate his position on Iqbal's personality/poetry. What is Ala Hazrat's ruling on Iqbal, if any?

    Side question:
Does the person named "Kandhalvi" have any connections to deoband?
