shaykh abd al-haq muhadith dehlavi states both the opinions in his madaarij an-nubuwwah and then suggests that it is not an article of faith, and we will not be asked in grave about the iman of abu talib, therefore it is wise to keep quiet and do not delve into this issue.

  3. I would recommend you to read Shaykh al Islam Mujaddid Imam Ahmad Rida rahimahullahu Ta'ala 's risaalah on this issue in sha Allah. The points raised by the people that believe the he passed away on iman have been answered.

Advice: This should not be made in to an issue because the masa'alah is mukhtalaf fi in the Ahl al Sunnah wa al Jama'ah. Both sides have their evidences.

  5. Part 2 of the poetry.

If the following bayt is authentically attributed to Abu Talib, it would settle matters considerably:

ألم تعلموا انا وجدنا محمداً .. نبيا كموسى خُطَّ في أول الكتبِ

  6. Brother Abdal Qadir, لست أهلاً لذلك . . . What I can do is direct you to Abu Talib's poetry, and the works of the scholars mentioned.

AbdalQadir time to move along! will check pm's.

Yes, this is not a majority opinion but nonetheless, an existent one amongst a sizable minority of the scholars of the Ahlus Sunnah. Brothers Suleyman and Qasim Hanafi, can you please explain the reasoning behind this opinion. I am asking for my own knowledge to understand the line of reasoning and interpretation as held by these scholars in relation to the explicit hadith from Sahih Bukhari which states Abu Talib died a kafir.

  8. also Qiblah al 'Aalam Pir Sayyid Mehr 'Ali Shah al Qadri al Chishti al Goldrawi 'alaihi al rahmah and
Shaykh Pir Muhammad Karam Shah al Azhari 'alaihi al rahmah there are many more...

  9. Oh, and since we're on this topic, I thought I'd share some of his poetry, as explained by al-Habib Dr. Muhammad b. 'Ali al-Baar.

  10. 'Afwan if you're offended . . .

Firstly, I'll quote brother Kattar Sunni's post, so that you know I'm not alone!

In terms of the Haba'ib who held that view, to be honest, I'm not sure who the first one was to come up with the opinion. However, it is well known from them, and here are a few names:

    -- al-Habib Ahmad b. Hasan al-'Attas
    -- al-Habib Ahmad b. 'Abd ar-Rahman b. Hasan al-Haddad in the hamish of Tathbit al-Fu'ad, bi Dhikri Majalis al-Qutb al-Haddad
-- al-Habib 'Alawi b. Ahmad as-Saggaf in his ash-Shihab ath-Thaqib li Kaydi man Adha Aba Talib

Imam Ahmad Zayni Dahlan in his Asna al-Matalib lists a few of the scholars of ahl as-sunnah who held that Abu Talib would be saved:

    -- Sayyid Muhammad b. Rasul al-Barzanji
    -- al-Ajhuri
    -- at-Talimsani
    -- al-Hafiz as-Suyuti
    -- Ahmad b. al-Husayn al-Mawsuli al-Hanafi
    -- Muhammad b. Salamah al-Quda'i
    -- al-Qurtubi
    -- as-Subki
    -- ash-Sha'rani

At the end of the day, as the oft-repeated maxim goes, la inkara fi masa'il 'l-ikhtilaf, and I think we can end it there.

Who from the Haba'ib held this opinion. Clear references please.

And what do you call 'strong'? Who was the first Sunni scholar who clearly held this view?

  12. There's a difference of opinion.

The position of the saadah aal ba 'Alawi is that he died as a Muslim, and this is certainly a valid and strong position. Admittedly, the opposing opinion is probably the majority opinion amongst the ahl as-sunnah. Interestingly, the rafidah have a few riwayaat which state that he died as a kafir!
