Unfortunately there really is a incorrect perception of sunniyat in the minds of the awaam and the 'ulama never address this issue. In many ways i think this is a big factor in many born sunnis defecting to baatil groups. Another thing that comes through is the fact he's a mureed of Maulana Ilyas Qadri damat barkatuhum and he is very strict in fulfilling the faraiz and waajibat.
i always feel that, as desi sunnis, we need to study and apply Ala Hazrat's 'ishq in conjunction with Mujaddid Alf Thaani's objectivity to tasawwuf. alhamdulillah he has blown to smithereens many of the misguidances and malpractices found amongst people who claim to be seekers on the path. he was around before the wahabi era, and i think if he was around today, he would be labelled a wahabi by many maulvis who run shop not saying that with any claims to knowledge or holier than thou attitude. i too need to learn and follow what i said. may Allah be well pleased with all our scholars and awliyaa
alhamdulillaah we still have scholars like this who can put sunni-ism in perspective without making an industry out of it and misleading people into a wannabe wali syndrome i think Ala Hazrat said explicitly that adopting mustahab without fulfilling the faraid and waajibat is jahalat, and if i'm not mistaken Seyyidina Ghawth-e-A'zdham also said words to this effect.
