    Do not hate (each other).

    That is do not get involved in means that lead to hate – because hate and love are emotions and a man cannot gain or rid oneself from these voluntarily; nor does he have the power of dispensation in emotions as RasūlAllāh şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam has said when he distributed among his blessed wives:

    O Allāh, this is my distribution in what I possess; and do not hold me responsible for that which is in Your Power and not in my power.” That is, my heart and my love and that which I dislike. This is reported by Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī and Nasā’ī.

    Bughđ literally means: To hate something because of something disagreeable; it is a synonym of dislike [karāhah].

    If it is between two, then it could be that either of them hates the other; or one hates the other [and the other does not]. In any case, if such hate, detest, dislike is not for the sake of Allāh, then it is forbidden. And this is the correct implication of the ĥadīth – and it would be either desirable or even obligatory to hate for the sake of Allāh.

    Allāh táālā has Himself said: “Do not take my enemies and your enemies, as your friends

    And RasūlAllāh şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam has said:

    He who loves for the sake of Allāh and hates for the sake of Allāh and gives for the sake of Allāh and withholds for the sake of Allāh; verily, he has perfected his faith [Abū Dāwūd, #4681].​

    Those who bear hate for the sake of Allāh will be rewarded for their zeal in the path of Allāh [i.e. to please Him, ghayrah] and for their ardency to respect the Right of Allāh and even if he is mistaken.

    It is obligatory for every one to follow that which is correct in their judgement and belief; and if the other person’s judgement contradicts one’s own, he despises the other for the sake of Allāh [based on his own ijtihād/judgement]. Such a person [even if he is himself incorrect] will be excused because of the error of judgement.

    I hope most of the sects and groups belong to this category [of poor judgement or incorrect interpretation] so long as their opinion does not fall into the category of disbelief and open transgression [fisqun bawāĥ] – and many points of differences in belief in our nation [ummah] are due to incorrect interpretation [ijtihād] or related to it.

    So when one sees that the other person opposes oneself because of his judgement and interpretation, it is not permissible to hate him. Because, in this case, it is not for the sake of Allāh – because that would be true if it were a sin, and this is not a sin [as error of judgement is not a sin]. A person who exercises his judgement is rewarded even if he commits an error.

    Do not be jealous (of one other).

    A Muslim should not be jealous of another Muslim; jealousy is a significant aspect of human nature. Jealousy means that a human does not like another to be above himself in any matter of virtue or superiority [or possession of a superior thing].

    This behaviour is categorised as follows:

    The [jealous] man strives to deprive the other person of his gift or blessing by word or deed. There are two types of this kind:

    o One who strives to deprive the person of his gift and obtain it himself
    o Another who strives to deprive the person of his gift without taking it for himself

    The latter is the worst of the two. And this is about jealousy which is deplorable and forbidden.

    This was the sin of Iblīs when he became jealous of Ādam álayhi’s salām when he saw him being given superiority over angels and that he was Allāh’s special creation [the idiom “created by His own two hands” is to emphasise his prominence]. Allāh táālā made the angels to prostrate to Ādam álayhi’s salām, and He taught him the names of every thing, and made him to dwell in Paradise [jiwārih = His neighbourhood; but it is not literal because Allāh táālā is transcendent from space].

    So Iblīs worked hard to have Sayyidunā Ādam álayhi’s salām removed from Paradise.
