yes, the jinns occupied the earth much before mankind was sent. the Jinns had created a lot of mischief, and Iblees was made their leader on earth after he controlled them. Iblees then went on to rise in ranks, with different names (abid, zahid etc), until he became a tutor for the angels.
I also heard that jins were living in earth before mankind, if any brother has more information about this please share.
