I am also curious to know the reasoning behind the recommendation. If it's the mas'ala itself, surely that can be learnt from other sources. Considering it's for darsis, they must have no trouble asking their teachers for an explanation of the mas'ala. It cannot be for some exceptional "research methodology" - as it is, the methodology is exceptional only for its complete absence. It can hardly be for the language, it's unexceptional on that account as well. Is it because it collects all the varying opinions about the issue and provides some much needed context to English speakers? If so, it should carry a rider about the author's prejudices. If it's simply to give a holistic view of the types of fiqhi literature available in the market, fair enough. But then again, it must carry a clear rider lest unsuspecting readers - which is sure to include non-darsis with little or no access to teachers who could apprise them of the disinformation neatly tucked between the other apparently harmless stuff - might mistake his opinion to be endorsed by sh. Asrar himself. I am bemused...
why is this book on the list sans a warning that he is an unreliable people-pleaser (especially devbanditii) In the same book he lies about Imam Ahmad Rida Khan, claiming that he was not proficient in hadith (an emphatic nod to his devbandit friends no doubt - plus, boosts the sales and sweetens the reviews) and that Alahazrat - what was it now - " could by no stretch of imagination be considered a major astronomer of his time". I do understand that anyone who reads the latter two works will not fall-in for asim's lies (perhaps that is why they were put in close proximity) however the book shouldn't even be on the list for sunni darsi students, or any list for that matter, except perhaps a list of under-researched and poorly argued works. It would be a different matter if the claims had been forwarded by some "uninitiated expert" like usha sanyal or barbara whassit, but coming from someone who knows well what he is about - it is nothing more and nothing less than a deliberate lie. A bad lesson in ethics for the as yet immature minds. There is an excellent refutation of his vitriol here.
hmm. apart from the Islamic works, the list leans heavily towards critiques on and expositions of modern political thought. We need some tech, science, philosophy, medicine and literature books on there too.
This is the essential extra curricula reading for first year Dars e Nizami students of Shaykh Asrar Rashid at SBC Masjid and any students enrolling later in the year at SBC Masjid or Lozells Rd Masjid. This list can be utilised by first year students at other institutes like Jamia alKaram (Nottingham), Suffat alIslam (Bradford) or Jamiat alMadinah. How to read: Select the smallest works that interest you the most first. Then move onto the next work. Continue like this until you complete the entire list. This list is not exhautive and after the first year the student who completes this list will develop his own acumen of selecting books to read as well as becoming a habitual reader.
