if you really want to change the name, then samir is a common arabic name. it means companion. and it is also closer to shamir.
People have also told my sister that you can't put Muhammed infront of Sami as it is Allah (swt) name, i just wanted to know is this correct?
i think there is abdu's sami' which means servant of the all hearing [Allah] and there's sami which means elevated, sublime, supreme according to a few websites
