Amongst the Somalis, the poetry of Shaykh Abdurahman Aw-Umar Al-'Ili is legendary (along with the poetry of Shaykh Yusuf Al-Bahr Al-Bakri and Shaykh Uways Al-Qadiri and the 'Ayniya poem of Shaykh Abdurahman Az-Zayla'i). Below is an example of Shaykh Abdurahman Aw-Umar's linguistic and spiritual prowess, as he was able to put the Salat An-Nuriya of Al-Qutb Sayid Ahmad Al-Badawi into verses of poetry. May Allah be pleased with all the shuyukh of Ahlu-Sunnah.
It’s quite sad that people only ever mention Shaykh Yusuf al-Nabhani but fail to acknowledge the hundreds of scholars from his time until now who were on the same level as him—or even surpassed him—in poetry praising the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, such as Shaykh Salih al-Ja’fari, Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse, Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba, Shaykh Isa al-Bayanuni, Shaykh Amin Kutbi, and Shaykh Baha al-Din al-Rawas.
Name a better scholar-poet in recent times than Shaykh Yūsuf al-NabhānīThere's simply no competition, and that's why he was called the Būsīrī of his age pic.twitter.com/Ldss7vKNse— بدر الدين (@D1mashqi) June 4, 2024 It would be improper for me to compare the Mujaddids as both are the crowns upon my head, but one may make the same case for al-Imām Ahmad Ridā KhānHis poetry and contributions to Hanafi Fiqh earned massive admiration even from his detractorsHadāiq’s Sharh spans 4,000 pages! https://t.co/w7FMWx4sBz pic.twitter.com/d59OeMxxd2— 🙂 (@has147_) June 4, 2024
Alahazrat didn't sit to write poetry. When love for RasulAllah ﷺ would overflow, he would pen his feelings. So it was very spontaneous. https://sunniport.com/index.php?threads/kis-ke-jalwe-ki-jhalak-hai.10330/#post-39030
Ibn Durayd is mentioned in Tabaqat Ash-Shafi3iyyatil Kubra as the most scholarly poet and the most poetic scholar - أعلم الشعراء وأشعر العلماء In our subcontinental Urdu language and culture that title certainly goes to Ala Hazrat without any doubt. It's my personal opinion that his Salam is the Urdu speakers' Burdah, notwithstanding the rest of his poetry. Allah knows best.
