Does anybody know where this sharh of the Muwatta by Mufti Saab can be purchased in the UK?

  2. Shaykh Mufti Shams ul Hudaa al Misbahi al Ridwi is the student of al Muhaddith al Kabeer Shaykh Zia ul Mustafa al Qadri. The Shaykh currently resides in Haekmonwike and is the Mufti of Daar al Iftaa Kanz ul Imaan. Al hamdulillah I have had the honour of travelling and siting with him many times, he is a very dedicated and hard working scholar may Allah protect him aameen.

A further link between the 'ulama of Zabid and Sayyidi Ala Hazrat (rahmatullah alayh) is found amongst the endorsers of his Hussam al Haramayn:

Sheikh Muhammad Sa’id bin Muhammad Yamani
    (1854-1936AD/1270-1354AH)

Born at Akhlidi in Yemen, he was educated at Zabid. He migrated to Hijaz in 1294AH and settled in Makkah permanently. He was imam of Shafiite and mudarris in Haram mosque. Most of his time was spent in the mosque, that‘s why he was called Hamamat ul Masjid. He versified Isma’ullah ul Husna (names of Allah), the hand written script and microfilm of which is preserved in Maktabah Haram Makki.

    37. For detailed account of Sheikh Muhammad Sa’id Yamani see, A‘lam ul Makkiyyin, vol. 2, p. 1020-21, ad Dalil ul Mashir, p. 108-9, Siyar wa Trajam, p. 120-22, Mu‘ajjam Mu’allafi Makhtutat-i-Maktabat ul Haram, p. 510, Nasr ud Darar, p. 58

Its Urdu translation is in pipe line. The arabic work was appreciated by the scholars from Al Azhar also.

Mufti Sahab's other work ( exposing wahabbis) is in press now.

Reflections from Zabid on Sayyidi al-Mufti Shams al-Huda's Sharh Muwatta al-Imam Muhammad:

Translation of reflections on volume 1 of Sayyidi al-Mufti Shams al-Huda al Misbahi’s (hafidhahullah) Sharh of Muwatta al-Imam Muhammad (rahmatullah alayh) from The Mufti of the Hanafis in Madinat al-‘ilm wa al-‘Ulama, Zabid, Yemen, [1] Shaykh Qasim Salih Muhammad Kuzaym al-Zabidi (hafidhahullah):

All praise belongs to Allah (subhanahu wa t’ala) Lord of all the worlds and may his mercy and salutations be upon our Liege-Lord Muhammad and upon his family and all his companions.

To proceed: After perusing and reading some of the chapters of this book I found it like an abundant, beneficial watering place in view of the fact that the illustrious shaykh and distinguished erudite scholar, Shams al-Huda Muhammad bin Husayn al-Misbahi, in this splendid book, embarked upon on a middle course and a charming and delightful manner of presentation and a refined manner of exposition, elevated above sharp critique, with fluent expression, concise in its wording, sturdy in its foundations and copious in its meanings. He treated the legal points and the juristic differences with intelligence and wisdom, distanced from zealous partisanship which prevents a person from being equitable and distances him from the most beautiful of characteristics.

I do not believe that during my study of some of the other commentaries of al-Muwatta anyone proceeded on his sound methodology or pursued his upright course in terms of research, precision, arrangement, verification, summarisation and facilitation of understanding.

He has gathered together the legal points, the linguistic benefits, the legal cases and the hadith-related benefits and has assembled that which both a scholar and a student cannot dispense with in this age with respect to having firmness upon the books of the principles of Islamic Jurisprudence and its branches and the statements of the lofty Imams of this religion and in particular our Greatest Imam Abu Hanifah al-Nu’man, may Allah make the benefit of his madhab continual.

And he has refuted the whisperings of those who misguide the laymen amongst the followers of the mujtahid Imams, by evidences and the statements of the ‘ulama and proofs, which no-one before him who had embarked on the commentary of al-Muwatta had arrived at.

And from that which beautified this blessed commentary was research and verification and citation of the statements of the ‘ulama, consolidated by the research of the Imam the [2] Mujtahid, the author of beneficial writings, al-Imam Ahmad Rida Khan, may Allah sanctify his secret, and enlighten his grave, and Allah (subhanahu wa t’ala) speaks the truth:

We provide help to all - to these and to those, by the bestowal of your Lord; and there is no constraint on the bestowal of your Lord”. (Surah al-Isra Verse 20)

And indeed I ask Allah the Most Great, the Most Generous and I turn to him by the intermediation of al-Habib al-A’zam salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, that he multiply the reward and requital for its author and for whosoever is a cause of spreading it and printing it and editing it and taking it to the Muslims and that he benefit by it Islam and the Muslims. Verily Allah is The Protector, The Praiseworthy, and may the mercy and salutations of Allah be upon our Liege-Lord Muhammad and upon his family and all his companions.

The poor slave to Allah the Most High,

(Mufti of the Hanafis in Zabid, al-Shaykh) Qasim Salih Muhammad Kuzaym, may Allah (t’ala) forgive them all. (Madinat al-‘ilm wa al-‘Ulama, (The City of Knowledge and ‘Ulama), the protected sanctuary of [3]Zabid in the blessed land of Yemen.) (Shawwal 1433 AH.)

[1] From amongst the Shaykh’s most prominent teachers are Mufti-Zabid al-Shaykh Asad Hamzah bin ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Awsi al-Hanafi, Mufti-Zabid Al-Sayyid Muhammad bin Sulayman al-Ahdal al-Idrisi al-Shafi’i and Mufti-Zabid al-Sayyid Muhammad ‘Ali al-Battah (rahmatullah alayhim ajma’in) (all three of whom were successively Mufti of Zabid and accreditors (muqrizoon) of al-Sayyid Muhammad bin ‘Alawi al-Maliki’s (rahmatullah alayh) famous, “Mafahim yajib an Tusahhah”)

[2] Al-Imam Ahmad Ridha Khan’s (alayhi rahmat al-Rahman) numerous works and in particular his monumental ‘al-Ataya al-Nabawiyyah fi al-Fatawa al-Ridwiyyah’ acclaim him as Mujtahid fil al-Masa’il in the Hanafi Madhab (of those who possessed the capability of derive rulings on those matters upon which there is no report from the Imams of the Madhab).

[3] The following hadith was narrated by the Great Hadith Master, Al-Imam 'Abd Al-Rahman Al-Dayba' al-Zabidi (rahmatullah alayh) (d. 944), (author of the famous 'tamyiz al Tayyib min al Habith fi ma yaduru ala alsinati al-naas min al Hadith’, and ‘Taysir al-Wusul ila jami' al-‘Usul min hadith al-Rasul’, both in the sciences of ahadith aswell as the popularly recited Al-Mawlid Al-Dayba'i) in his celebrated, 'Bughyatul Mustafid fi akhbari Madinat al-Zabid', whilst enumerating the qualities of the city of Zabid (May Allah preserve and protect her and her people by the du'a of Sayyid al-Mursaleen salAllahu alayhi wa sallam).

'Abd al-Razzaq Al-San'ani (rahmatullah 'alayh) relates: M'amar (rahmatullah 'alayh) informed me that it had reached him that the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was sitting amongst his companions one day and he said: "O Allah save the companions of the ship.", then he waited for a while and said, "It has passed." So when they came close to Al-Madinah he said:"They have come and a righteous man is leading them", he said: The ones who came in the ship were the Ash'ariyun, and the one who lead them was 'Amr ibn al Hamiq al Khuza'iy (radhiyAllahu anhu), he said: The Prophet (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Where have you come from?" They said: from Zabid, The Prophet (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "May Allah bless Zabid", they said: and Rima' ,He (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "May Allah bless Zabid", they said: and Rima' O Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam), so he said the third time "and Rima' ".

[Narrated by Al-Hafizh 'Abd Al-Razzaq Al-San'ani (rahmatullah alayh) in his Musanaff, Hadith 19891, vol 5 page 54, Also narrated by Al-Hafizh Al-Bayhaqi (rahmatullah alayh) with the same chain in Dalaail Al-Nubuwwah vol 6 pag 298 and narrated mursal by Al-Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahmatullah alayh) in Fadhaail Al-Sahabah hadith 1560 in a summarised form, by way of 'Abd Al-Razzaq from M'amar from Qatadah.]
