I read recently that when Imam Sharani met his Shaykh, he was ordered by his shaykh to sell all his books and to stop attending circles of knowledge, temporarily I assume.

We also know about Imam Ghazali and how after attaining high positions he eventually left it all and we know the rest of the story.

My question is, and of course we are not them, but, does a student reach a point when he feels like it is better to put the books away, not study any further, and focus instead on dhikr and purification of the self? Keep in mind, the person knows his essential islamic knowledge, and has people he can ask if something comes up he doesn't know the answer to.
