i can understand your cynical response, but this was an immense self-goal by israel. --- israel's biggest export is tech - and what they just announced to the world is, you can buy anything from us, but we are the proverbial poisonous snake rolled in the sleeve. even those who are supporting israel for their own narrow interests are shocked - and i don't think anyone will trust israel anymore. it may be a good laugh for the israelis in the short term, but it was terribly short-sighted. if they had an edge, by infiltrating into tech devices, that is now in the open - cannot be brushed aside as 'conspiracy theory'. this has far reaching consequences.

It seems that the exploding pagers were implanted with just 3 grams of explosive. The pagers beeped and went blank, prompting users to hold these to their faces/eyes to check what was happening to the devices; then these exploded to maximise the damage (with electronic components acting as shrapnels). Right out of hollywood movie plot. Apparently Israel had executed similar strategy on a single target few years back (as Ronen Bergman exposed it in his book "Rise and Kill First"). Another theory doing round is that Hezbollah was on the verge of discovering that the devices had been sabotaged, forcing Israel to trigger explosions before it had been planning to do so at opportune time later. Now that walkie talkies are also exploding, it seems plausible that Israel will now activate/trigger all such implanted devices with immediate effect before these get deactivated or discarded.

For all their bravado, Hamas, Hezbollah & Iran are guilty of severely underestimating Israel's threat. There's no way Ismail Haniyeh would have been assassinated if he stayed put in Qatar or Turkey. Israel would dare not create a diplomatic row by conducting assassination on foreign soil (of non-enemy state). Anybody in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iran etc. is an easy target and Israel has free license to kill with impunity. Israel runs a very sophisticated espionage ring within Iran (thanks to presence of dissidents); entire security apparatus within Iran is heavily compromised. Several high-profile targets have been brazenly assassinated and nuclear/military facilities are routinely sabotaged. What was Haniyeh thinking when he threw caution to wind for a pointless trip to Iran? How stupid of Hezbollah (with all their bluster of sophisticated armory and technically skilled operatives) to have ordered/accepted huge shipment of compromised pagers! I was shocked to discover recently how many Hezbollah militants/commanders have been killed by stupidly walking into Israeli traps.
