It is a part of the most liberal and among top universities in the US. It allows co-education within the Departments of religion and near-east studies. They are true to their values of freedom of religion and freedom of rights. .
didn't you know? shaykh hamza yusuf and co. are above the shari'ah - they can do no wrong. in fact, whatever they do, that becomes the shari'ah. why are you pointing out the rules of the shari'ah to such people? they are not mukallaf. it is only us who can be questioned, not them. they are superior, 21st century, modern 'muslims' who have permission to do as they please. they are 'shaykhs', you see; and our ulama are just 'mawlanas' - a 'shaykh' is not answerable. he cannot be questioned in any instance and if he is, he is totally allowed to say something like: 'you are listening to shaytan here, just be quiet and blindly follow us'; thus dismissing any sort of criticism. people who follow such 'shaykhs' are far more progressive and farsighted than us backward, tunnel visioned, stuck in the 20th century muslims. we should move on from just judging according to the shari'ah and should heed the advice of 'shaykhs' instead. they know better. just ignore all the facts and repeat: 'they can do no wrong' - you'll be fine.
